2.3 carb help. What are these gizmos?

Well... accelerator pump is definitely toast. Fired it up and noticed fuel leaking out of the side of it and I could nudge the throttle ever so gently to increase rpms but hitting the gas at any speed resulted in it sputtering out. Vacuum advance is definitely not working either.

Got a new one coming tomorrow.

Those older carbs used a leather accelerator pump cup. Sometimes you can get it working again by just flattening them out.

I think the 5200 had a diaphragm type pump.

They do... I will bet the spring is in a least two pieces and a bit of a crumble pile settled in the bottom.

Ok here's a brain teaser for you. How do you set the crank/cam/belt timing on this thing when there are ZERO marks on the block. The pulleys have dots but theres nothing to line them up to on the block!!!

WAG: use a straight edge across the centerlines.
PS: I've never worked on a 2.3.....
I answer these in the hope of learning from more knowledgeable people. It makes me do a happy dance when I'm right.

I can get the crank at TDC using the mark on the timing cover. I can get the cam to TDC by using the straight edge on the 2 cam lobes with exhaust next to open. I cannot however get the oil pump/distributor gear right. There is no marks or tricks for this one.

I can get the distributor gear where I think it should be, rotor lines up with the #1 on the cap. But it wont run like this. It will only run by moving the #1 plug wire to where number 4 should be. Then it will idle beautifully but not take any throttle without dying.

I'm ready to set this thing on fire. I'd kill for a ECU...

Accelerator pump is fixed as is the vacuum leak and vacuum advance.

Btw wtf does wag mean...

Everything I find online says there should be little diamond shaped marks on the head and block to set the gears! Theres nothing!!! Aahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Stupid forum software or something will only let me like posts. I can't choose other options like most other people seem to be able to. Otherwise I would have given a sad face emoji.
The #1 is across the cap from the #4? For some reason that makes me think the distributor is out 180*. Not my strong point...

#1 and 4 are 90 degrees off... done been tried running 180 each way. It only likes being 90 off.

I've done the timing now 5 times, I can make this thing run with the timing set 5 different ways. But each time I'll get idle smooth, dies when you hit the gas. Im gonna re time it once more and gonna throw a fuel pump at it. If that don't fix it I'm pretty much done. I have no real tools here, not even a fuel pressure gauge. The thing has an aftermarket cam pulley, hobbled together random parts and it's about 20 years beyond my abilities. I also figured out why there's no marks to line up the pulleys, they are on the backing plate of the timing cover and its missing...

The oil pump/ distributor gear... the timing diamond (some of them also have a triangle, ignore it.) should be straight up.

Looks like you've got it right there in that photo Dirtman, appears to be dead center halfway between the two bolts.
That should be TDC, then guestimate how many degrees it needs. From there you'll just have to go by ear.

Once at idle then pull the throttle and once more, split the difference maybe

oh gosh, the whole thing turns don't it :/

It's been a while since I had my 83 with the 2.0L but this still sounds like a carb issue or fuel delivery. Seems like it wouldn't idle super smooth if the timing was off. I did the belt on my 83 a couple times and don't remember any issues like this.

That is an advanceable cam gear... for degree change to cam timing

Edit... I used one on a 1.7 VW that was sold by FAT Performance. Maybe poke around Esslinger and see if they have instruction for their adjustable cam gear I will bet it is one of their gears.
