1993 Splash in SC

The weatherman seems to be saying that I better move the project indoors if I want to paint this next week. Note; I did not "clean up" the garage, except to sweep the floor. I merely shuffled and rearranged to make room to paint.

You're right about that. I already have 4 or 5 trips in the planning for this year. Camping, exploring and wheeling in parks. Plus, I need a couple more trips to Windrock to use the annual pass I bought there.
I'm going in June. Mainly the SxS. Also at beginning of June I'm going to Gatlinburg. Planning on hitting Horse Creek while I'm there with a couple new Rangers if you'd like to join. I don't think it's real technical but veiws look beautiful. Just 3 of us so not a big group.

Actually just checked and I'll be in Windrock July 11 to 14

Went to move the Ranger into the driveway yesterday for upcoming suspension work. Click. Click. Click. Just as I was contemplating a deadblow hammer to beat the starter, I tried one more time and it started. Better not happen again.

Got both coats of black on the bottom. I should be able to flip it upright this weekend and continue painting. Decided to paint the toolbox, since it was old and rusty and ugly brown and I had welded on it. It only needs one more coat of blue. My rattlecan technique isn't any better than cheap brushes and rollers. And it started raining on the tacky blue paint just before I went out to take this picture.

Since y'all like pictures...

Its all in the prep, clean/sand/mask. my truck has been rattle-canned on most of it, was all dark blue originally. I swapped on a silver ‘97 bed and got the idea to make it a two-tone classic paint scheme. Did a stripe on the hood too, its held up quite well, hood is showing some deterioration but all the heat from the engine is probably the culprit. Cap is rattle canned also. along the edges by the molding you can tell, hard to get sandpaper in those tight spots. Ive only ever sandblasted & painted “right” one thing, Dad’s ‘46 2N tractor. used por-15 as a undercoat. It still looks good, not museum good but a lot better then before I started on it.

I'm too impatient to do a good paint job. And the bigger the job, the faster I want it done. I'm just not cut out for painting. I know how to do it right. But I can't make myself do it.

I also never found out for myself how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop.

Flipped it right-side-up, cleaned it and put a coat of primer on the top and sides. Then I started working on suspension. Got the passenger side rear bushings and extended shackles done. And found out the exhaust is now in the way. Need to rearrange the tailpipe and last hangar. Always something.

By the way. I was able to remove the old spring bushings with the spring still on the axle. I cut a slot in the outer bushing sleeve with my Sawzall. Then used a balljoint press with some miscellaneous other bits and pieces to push the sleeve out of the spring eye. Hoping all the others go that well.

cut the tail pipe before the final bend and go straight back with a stainless 24” pipe.

Yeah, that, just cut it after the hangar and weld the leftover straight part back then cut it off just ahead of the bumper... mine's just been going straight out for years just under the bumper and it works out just fine...

How about like this?

It's hard to get excited about working outside today. The temperature has been dropping since sunrise and it's windy. Currently 31 with wind chill of 25. I should be doing the spring bushings right now. But I think I'll wait til tomorrow. It will be colder, but hopefully less windy.

The exhaust works for me. Keeps it simple and gets the job done.

Yeah, that's less work... I should get one of those hangers, the random wire I have through the stock hanger bushing isn't quite sufficient...

Got the second coat of paint on the bed today. Then went outside and did the other passenger side spring bushings. It was cold, but no wind. Really pretty pleasant to work out there. Now, it's time to give the dog a bath.
