It's all the little things that add up. Price wise seems to be about what I spent on steel for mine a couple years ago, not too bad considering.

It’s like that with my trailer. I’ve been keeping tabs as I go. IIRC, I’m up to about $5,000 in paint, metal, and hardware. Still about $10,000 cheaper than a significantly smaller equivalent store bought model. Of course that doesn’t account for the number of man hours I’ve put in the project.

I just found a metal shop here in town. I've been wanting to go inside... but I fear that big vacuum that turns on and sucks my wallet empty. I need to put a materials list together for a couple things I want to build for the cargo area in G-Unit. Then I will see how tolerant my neighbors are to the sounds of Gump's Garage.

Your trailer started as one of those 400$ folding hazard fraught units right? I recently aquired one of those I feel like upgrading sort of like you did.. not 5k worth of upgrades though haha.

Open flat bed trailer with some stake pockets are actually pretty cheap, I got mine a couple of years ago for about $3,300 18' steel deck, with ramps that slide up under the deck, D-rings on the deck, electric brakes, all that stuff.

The enclosed trailers and dump trailers is really when you get into pricey ones. $15K - $20k easy.

Very similar. Northern Tool sells their version of the same Chinese made trailer I bought. The original kit with title, some 3/4” plywood and 2X4s for the deck and sides, and some 3/8” galvanize hardware totaled out to about $700 in 2007.

For what I needed, it was a better buy than the expanded metal trailers sold at the big box stores. A lot easier to work on as well if you don’t have a welder. Everything bolts together.

Yeah... there are a BUNCH of nuts and bolts on that trailer. I'd venture to say you might have been able to buy a welder like my Hobart 140 for the price of the hardware.

The hardware came with the kit. The galvanized hardware mentioned above was for the deck and sides and was rather minimal.

At today’s prices, you might be right though.

I bought s 5x10 dump trailer here in TN for 800. I thoightvi would weed to do a lot to it but ut was in surprisingly good shape. I did put new wheels and tires, wheel bearings, brake pads and that's it. It has a 3500 lb. axle. I've got abou 1200 in the whole thing. Needs paint and will be like new

It's heavier than original. But not horrible. I can still lift either end. I'll weigh it before installation. I believe that even with my camping gear, I'll be within the original load rating of the truck.

But, we'll see.

You're right about that. I already have 4 or 5 trips in the planning for this year. Camping, exploring and wheeling in parks. Plus, I need a couple more trips to Windrock to use the annual pass I bought there.
