Hello everyone!

I have an 89/92 4wd ford ranger. Its been rolled and all thats left is a working 2.9l engine and drive train. The upside is i have a samurai that is in need of a motor. I'm looking to do an engine swap, transmission, and tcase from the ford but the good axles are on the sami. with this in mind, I'll be using the sami tcase, and axles.

The zuk has a divorced tcase and the front diff is on the passenger side. My question is, can I use the current transmision from the ranger or is there another transmision that will bolt up to the 2.9l that will allow me to mate it to the suzuki tcase.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I figured I'd join this forum case the heart of the new build is from a Ranger.
Thanks!

I don't know a whole lot about this kind of stuff but if it's a divorced t-case wouldn't you be using a 2-wd trans? Then you would "just" have to get a drive shaft to mate the two?

That sounds like it might work. Thanks for offering some advice. Does anyone know what type of trans I should use? I'd like to use something that would bolt up. Anyone else got any other suggestions? Types of tranny that will bolt up to use a divorced tcase?

Yeah, a divorced t-case basically uses a 2wd trans, runs a drive shaft to the case, then the standard 2 shafts out of the case.

I think the best trans would be an m5od from a later 4.0 litre; after ~'91. If you do some searching you should be able to find all the info you need from people more certain of the facts. IIRC the 4.0l trans will bolt up and you use the 4.0l pressure plate, clutch and starter, it's a larger 10" clutch vs 8.5"[?] and the m5od is purportedly the strongest of the stock trans. You would have to install the engine/tranny and then get the measurement for the driveshaft, although you could get really close measurements just using a tape measure. Don't be afraid to set the engine on a slight angle to make the angles on the u-joints less, if that's an issue. Warning, all this info is gleaned from reading, not actually doing. So do some checking first, don't just take my word.
Good luck,

Richard
ps; So what do you get when you cross a Ford and a Suzuki.....
A sord of a truck?

Thanks guys!!! So the m5od will bolt up right? I guess its time to craigslist it. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

What trucks/cars use the 2wd m5od tranny? I'm searching for parts cars. Is it 1991 rangers and up? explorers too or broncos and mazda trucks? i know some of these are in the same family. I found a 95 2wd ranger but the junk yard wants almost 1000 for bell housing, tranny, clutch plate and drive shaft.... way too much. Thats more then my ranger donor.

Will a 1993 Ford Ranger. 3.0L V6 2wd tranny bolt up?

Thanks again

The search button is on the dark blue header bar, third from the right.
From what I understand the tranny you want to use is from the 4.0l.
The bellhousing bolt pattern from the 2.9l [and maybe the 2.8] is the same as the 4.0l.
There have also been people that use a c-4/c-5 hybrid [IIRC].
Again, do some research with the search button and then you can tell me how it's done.
Good luck,

Richard

what about a c4 tranny to 2.9L? easy bolt up?

ok... so I've been searching and the 2wd trans would work but I can't get one cheap enough out here. I live in connecticut and everyone drives a 4wd. 4wd parts trucks are available. They are costing more then the truck itself.

I've searched for C4 tranny and they are less expensive and more abundant. Will this bolt up directly to the 2.9l? No info when I searched on this forum(if there is, I did try with no luck) Whats needed to do so?

these are the thread i'm following if anyone is interested.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=479837&highlight=9l+ford+samurai

So both guys mention using the c4 tranny. I'd like to use an auto too... think it would be nice to have.

this is what I found for C-4's

Strong running 240 motor and C4 transmission removed from a 1973 Ford F100 ($100)

1965 mustang 200 6-cylinder engine and matching c-4 automatic trans $350

early ford 3-speed automatic transmissions c-4 ($75)

Please help me out guys... thanks!!!!

did my search... I know people get bored of answering the same quesitons but I'm not the best at searching and when I do, i get about 500 hits. I did see everything in the tech library... 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 do have the same bolt pattern and the m50d tranny does seem like the best option. thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Still... I did not see a how too post. What do you mean by c4/c5 hybrid IIRC

AGAIN, thanks... all the help is greatly appreciated.

the shorty shorty short c4 is the one desired.

Is it possible to convert my 4wd transmission into a single output shaft to bolt up to my samurai tcase? Can i get rid of the adapter iin between the trans and tcase and grab the parts from a junkyard ford ranger 2wd tranny? I figure I would need the parts to make it look like the 2wd ford tranny. Just a thought or is it tooooo much work. I'm hoping this would be cheaper

What is this out of so I can start looking around and asking? does the shorty shorty short bolt right up to the 2.9l. Is it an auto... dosent need to be but just wondering. If so, if not, what is need to mate the two together?

Thanks

This thread reminds me of Loanranger and his project Fordzuki. Speaking of Loanranger haven't heard from him in forever.

I did see project Mazzuki... in the end he got rid of it. I did however get a few good pointers but he didn't go into detail regarding the tranny to sami tcase. For one, he doubled up using two tcases. I'm too much of a noob to understand but looked crazy. The whole thread was great.. just not enough insight for my question here. The pictures actually help me get some idea but without the explination behind them, I have no idea what i'm looking at.
