1984 C-3 Shifter questions

Hi. I have a 84 Ranger with the 2.3 and C-3 transmission. I have 2 questions.

1. When in park it moves left and right from the park position (all the way right) to the far left where you shift into the other gears with no resistance. (think and upside down L shift pattern) Should there be a spring or something providing resistance?

2. The button on the shifter does nothing. How do I fix this.

It`s 30 years old and parts wear out the handle just pulls straight up with a good tug. then remove the four screws for the plastic cover and lift it up to twist the light out of the cover and then you will see how it works. You may get lucky and find a good replacement at the bone yard the button releases the lock to keep you from shifting into reverse while driving forward. If you can`t find a donor vehicle you will just have to live with it. I`m not sure what it takes to replace it but I imagine it wont be easy.

So it is a mechanical failure in the handle and assembly. If I can find a replacement that works will be the challenge. What about the side to side free movement?
