Hi guys just bought a 84 4x4 ranger with the 5 speed Toyo yesterday and it needs some work. The thing that bugs the hell out of me right now is the crazy amount of play in the shifter, I mean the thing twists sideways alittle bit making some shifts quite a pain. It seems this is a common issue but I can't seem to find any detail on how to fix the problem or maybe I just didn't look hard enough anyway if you could tell how to fix this nussiance it would be GREATLY apperciated. Thanks

Did you take the boot off and check the entire shifter lever? I picked up another trans for my 87 at the junkyard and the shifter was real sloppy because the white plastic ring that holds the ball on was cracked. I'm not sure about the 84, but mine is just 4 bolts and you can lift the shifter lever/ball straight up out of the trans.

there is a ball about 3/4 inch dia that
should be on the end of the shifter.
if it is gone or slid up the shaft, that
will do it. mine slid up, so i took the ball
off and drilled out the base of a 30-06
cartridge and cut it off to about an inch
and used it to hold the ball down where
it belongs.

Well took the shifter off today and found that the actually housing that bolts to the shifter is worn which allows it to turn side to side and up and down, so looks like I'm getting a new shifter

Well after a day of searching the internet I finally found a replacement shifter for 112 bucks from Allstate Gear Company, I feel thats aliitle much and was planning on calling the scrapyard tommorow to see if they have anything. Was wondering if you guys know of any other places that sell these shifters? Thanks

Junkyard is your best bet. You can get them from the dealer, but at a premium.
