I have a 2003 XLT 3.0L automatic ranger. When I am cruising down the road, no matter what speed, the rear differential is quiet. However, when I let off the gas at any speed above about 40mph and some slight "reverse pressure" is applied to the drive train, there is a whine noise. It's not terribly loud, just enough to be noticeable to the somewhat observant ear.

From what I've read a bad bearing will make noise all of the time (even under normal conditions driving forwards) but mine doesn't.

I've checked the fluid level and it's fine.. Actually looked very clean since the truck only has 35k on it. I was thinking about changing the fluid to a heavier weight synthetic gear lube but I doubt that will be a permanent fix.

Any ideas what this whine could be? Is this normal for these rangers?
