Right or wrong, some may be. I know Honda has been telling their customers with older Hondas that 5W20 is what they are recommending. I never bought that line and stuck with what is listed in the owner's manual and on the cap. I'm sure 5W20 was around in 1999. Why would they recommend 5W30 then but now 5W20 is ok?

Honda owners tend to be very loyal. Prolly tryin to wear the old ones out to sell new ones.

I rebuilt the chassis and running gear on a 35 pickup a few years ago. The original trans, rear, and steering box fluid was whale oil based and compared to 75 year old whale oil 80-90 doesn't stink. As I understand it, the original Ford friction modifier that's now sold as the Ford Racing/Performance modifier has a whale oil component. It stinks enough for that to be true. I don't speak Jap car and don't know or care what they recommend, Honda also dragged their feet from 2004 until NHTSA held their feet to the fire in 2014 on the Takata airbag recall in direct violation of federal safety regs and that was OK. If Ford or GM had done that the CEO would be hanging in front of the courthouse.

Friends of mine at our shop ( about 20 people ) would put used diff covers under seats or in the back of cargo area's, of each others vehicles, just to spread the aroma.

When I went thru a final drive on my little C Allis tractor the dried oil/grease smell had me dry heaving. Freaking godawful nasty crap. It was also ancient though so there is that factor too.

Well used gear oil is pretty stout smelling though too.

Dad has said he had to get whale oil for the Posi in his '67 Chevelle back in the day too.
