What will I need?

I just ordered a JVC touch screen receiver/stereo for my 2002 Ranger XLT. Now I'm wondering if I need a kit to connect this JVC to my Ranger. I would like to mate directly into the factory Ford connectors.

I don't know where you ordered from. But look up your new device on Crutchfield and their site will let you know if they recommend any extra installation stuff like cable adapters, bezel, etc. For your vehicle.

You either need the wiring harness adapter or hack the factory radio connector off and wire the head unit direct. In the second case, you also need a wiring diagram so you now which wires are which in the factory harness.

There is a company called Scosche. They make numerous wiring harness adapters that will adapt your original dash harness to just about any and every aftermarket radio.
The harness that is supplied with your JVC probably has a plug that plugs into the radio. The Scosche harness adapter, which are vehicle specific, plugs into your original Ranger plug.
The wireing diagram that will come with the Scosche adapter will have the correct wiring colors so it's just a simple matter of connecting the wires.
You do not, should not cut your factory plug...there is no need too.
Been using Scosche products over last 25 years and have never had a problem,
You can also, as mentioned, check Crutchfield as they also carry vehicle specific adapter plug/wire sets.

This is a photo of the Crutchfield Metra harness adapter. It will plug into the factory harness. You then use the plug that came with the JVC, and simply connect the wires. Wire color is pretty much universal new, even between makes.

Absolutely. Its well worth the money.

Otherwise, you'll be back here in a few days saying " I installed a new stereo. Now, when I turn it on, the fuel pump shuts off and I smell rotten clam chowder. What happened?"

That and splicing the factory harness just leaves a headache to deal with next time you (or the next owner) spill clam chowdah on it and need to replace the radio.

This is why I usually buy radios from them. Their price on the radio itself is usually comparable to Amazon, but they throw in the install gear for free.
