Yup use sealant or a gasket, not both. For diff covers I never use a gasket, black RTV works just fine (sometimes better than a gasket).

I always a bit of RTV on both sides of the gasket unless the torque is critical. Helps if you have imperfect gasket surface, scratched or pitted.

However I've never used a gasket on a diff, I actuality have 2/3 cork gaskets for an 8.8 that came with parts kits. I know it's not going to leak using Black RTV, why take the chance using a gasket, have the gasket leak, then pull it off and redo it. If I was in a hurry the gasket might be nice, not have to wait for the RTV to cure.

Only thing I'll put on a gasket is high tack or indian head but that's more for getting the gasket to stay in place during assembly than actually sealing. Modern stuff is using traditional gaskets less and less and the gaskets they do use are generally rubber o ring style. Pretty much anything with a flat surface on a new car is sealed with RTV from the factory, and it's not just about being cheap, it simply works...

Not having to wait was my reasoning for the gasket. It's just a simple solution with no extra cleanup afterwards, etc.

Ok trail ride is coming up. What rhymes with trail ride? Mini trs flag.

And on trail ride subject, how do I get the camera mounted to properly document the event?

Here is what I have to work with..

I would use a suction cup mount for everything but underneath. There I can usually find an existing hole in the frame and use a 1/2-20 bolt and the tripod mount.

The 3M buckle gopro mounts are nice for mounting on glass too. They may pull off paint, I haven't gotten brave enough to try it there yet.

Tether the camera as much as you can with a shoelace or something so it doesn't fall off and bob around in the pond until it gets sucked into @fastpakr's intake.

I am pretty confident of that magnet holding to the truck. Gonna put a thin cloth on the magnet on the painted surfaces.

Did a drive around the block with it tonight, got a bumpers view of the neighborhood and a lower driver's door view. Then mounted it to my son's bike handlebars.

The only gripe I have is battery life is ho-hum and SD card holds 48 min of video...on an 8 gb card. Need a few 32 gb cards

May need a few SD cards

Tried that, and the area still was not able to have enough clearance to run the truck. Used a block of wood and a jack to push the area up, without a million hammer marks.

I trailered it half way to Attica, took it off the trailer and drove it around some woods in Kentucky. More tomorrow.

Oh. What was that noise? I'm the only one in the primitive camping area here tonight. There are 3 or 4 people in the RV area but that's over 1/4 mile from me.

Your tent is on the ground? Not on the trailer?

No rain forecast.simple setup here. I set up camp before unloading the Ranger. I'll be on the trailer with full canopy in Attica.
