I have a 2001 ranger with the 4.0 SOHC in it. I am looking into getting another 4.0 SOHC engine to learn how to rebuild it. What 4.0 SOHC engine will be a direct swap for my truck?

They're all exactly the same as far as I know.

Spark plugs are all the same, the OHV 4.0 had shorter plugs I believe.

Thanks. but I should have been more specific on the plug part. I should have said wiring harness etc for that one, but thank you anyway!

Some of the electrical plugs may have changed over the years, but it won't be a huge issue. If anything it will just be sensors or something that can be swapped from the old one.

I have heard rumors that some of the Ranger engines didn't have the balance shaft, but I have never been in a non-Explorer unit to confirm that.

Mechanically they are all close enough for jazz.

what i have gathered up on the sohc... i did a swap into my 95 ranger.. i have a 98 bottom end and a 04 topend... i first started messing with these motors when i had to do a motor swap into my ole mans 04 that i bought.. had a brokem timing chain guides and tensioners. i ended up replacing it with a 01 explorer motor.. motors were identical i used all the 04 sensors and intake and basically just used the 01 block and heads.. the balance shaft was supposed to be in the 4x4 models to help on vibrations... well his didnt have it was strange.. the explorer motor i swapped in DIDNT have one.. with or with out it i dont see any differences in vibrations. now my 95, the block is a 98 and the intake manifolds egr set up is of a 04. i used the stock 95 harness and re routed some wires... the biggest items to check on these motors is the jackshaft blade tensioner and the balance shaft tensioner. i had issues with both mine.. 97 SOHCs had a the odd style intake and was a returned system. but the blocks and heads are of the same.. the oil filter adapters are different as well. the early sohcs take the older filters and the newer ones take the smaller filters.
