Dang man, are you near Muscle Shoals? Loved the PBS documentary on that, about 50? years ago :D
Wish you the best of luck finding your transmission :)

You are in luck with a 1999 Ranger, 1998-2000 Rangers don't need a "speed sensor"

With a 1999 4.0l you can use a 1990-2011 4.0l 4x4 Manual trans
OR
A 1998-2011 4.0l 4x4 automatic trans
(1995-1997 will work as well)

So the later the year the better for less miles

2001 and up automatic will have 2 extra, external sensor, plug-ins that a 1999 computer can't use
2001 and up manual will have 1 extra
OSS (speed sensor) was added in 2001

The 4R55E and 5R55E are the same transmissions, both are 4-speeds

Off-roaders with the A4LD trans(grandfather of the 4R/5R) high-jacked the 3-4(OD) shift solenoid to make the 4-speed a 6-speed
They would turn OD on in 1st to get a new ratio(gear) between 1st and 2nd, and also in 2nd to get a new ratio(gear) between 2nd and 3rd
The 2nd and 3rd in between ratio wasn't much of a difference, but the 1st and 2nd in between was good to have

So in 1997/98 4.0ls Ford tried it out, added that OD on shift to the Computer software, turns OD solenoid on while still in 1st, this gave a smoother(lower RPM) shift, so 1st +OD, then shift to 2nd, so 2nd is now actually 3rd, lol
So they made a 5-speed out of a 4-speed with no changes at all to the transmission, very clever these Americans :)

Would I need to change the trans computer for a 96 4.0 trans to work

No, 1995 thru 2011 4R and 5R used the same solenoids, and internal sensors, plug and play

Only the 2001 and up computers needed to use/have the added external sensors

So 1995 thru 2000 computers can use any year 4R or 5R as is
Your 1999 computer will use either as a 5R 5-speed because of its computer software

A 1996 Computer would use a 5R as a 4R 4-speed, same transmission 1 less "gear", because its not an actual "gear", lol

@RonD Got a 2003 4wd 4.0 transmission out of a ranger. Just double checking. It should bolt right up. And I plug all wires in except the extra two. Anything else I should expect?

Yes, plug and play, there will be an extra bolt hole in the bell housing, not needed with the 4.0l OHV engines

Remember to "seat the torque converter" prior to installing transmission on to the engine, you WILL f'up a perfectly good transmission if you don't do that

If you are not sure what that means Google: seat torque converter
Watch the 1:54 Video
All automatics are the same for this one thing, not specific to Fords
