The red and brown wire are for the single TCC solenoid inside trans

The 4 or 5 wire switch above the shifter is the NSS(neutral safety switch), and it also turns on Reverse lights

Its a plunger type switch and looks like this: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/DesAAMXQbcRQ7A21/s-l400.jpg

If you take off the connector it unscrews from the transmission
In side the trans on the shift arm is a Cam that moves the plunger in the switch up and down to connect key to starter motor in Park and Neutral
AND to connect 12v to Reverse lights when in Reverse

Don;t have a 1988 wiring diagram but should a purple/orange wire that has 12v with key on, and then a Black/pink stripe wire that runs back to Reverse lights, those two are connected when switch is in Reverse position

Just called solenoid connector as far as I know, 1986 just has the 2 wire, 1988/89 went to 3 wire

You were looking up manual trans backup light

In an automatic it a combination switch, neutral and backup switch, you circled it

Look at this picture: https://palaceofkibble.com/A4LD Kickdown.jpg

You can see the solenoid connector, to the lower left, and the NSS in the upper center behind the wire loom
