I've got a '95 Ranger, 2.3L, that broke the timing belt the other night on the way home. In the process of replacing the belt my bar slipped and took out one of the teeth on the crankshaft sproket. I've lined up the timing marks on the camshaft, oil pump, and Crankshaft and the truck won't start. Will the tooth missing cause the engine not to start?

it shouldnt, you need to have the #1 cyl at tdc when you line up the marks

How many miles on the truck when the belt broke? Just curious to know how long the belt lasted.

It doesn't look like the belt was ever replaced before, the current mileage is 137000. The manual leads you to believe that it won't fire with the tooth missing, as it looks for a specific number of teeth in every rotation.

Heres something to try. When you put the belt on turn the motor over twice with a ratchet on the crank clockwise see if the timing marks are still lined up. thats what the Haynes book says to do. I dont think the tooth missing would do anything unless its jumping there and nocking out the timing. the crankshaft timing sensor on my 90 (i dont know maybe yours is different being newer) picks up the timimng off of the harmonic balancer.

Right, the CKP sensor can be disturbed during the timing belt change which can cause a no start condition...many folks have run into this before. The Crankshaft Damper should have 1 tooth missing by design. The PCM uses this large gap as a reference to determine base timing and to synchronize the ignition coils for proper spark timing sequence. If you have an extra tooth missing, the reference is going to be hosed and create major problem for the PCM.

Correct, with 2 teeth missing the computer is completely confused and will not even attempt to start the tuck.

Time for a trip to the junkyard.
