Well I now have one less.

This one was stolen over the weekend. Taurus Tracker .44 Mag, stainless steel, with 6.5" barrel. Sucks because it (probably) can't be replaced. This was a "Sports South Exclusive" limited production run. The they make their large frame revolver in .44 mag with 6 shot and 6.5" barrel, but the Tracker is a medium frame 5 shot and normal production has a max of 4" barrel. The Large frame is a fair bit heavier than the Tracker that I had.

My 44 mag
Just a word of warning to anyone that thinks they are safe with a security box or less, you might want to reevaluate how much you value your firearms. This revolver, my Remington 788, and my Ruger standard auto were all in a Stack-On (GCB-14P or GCB-914) security cabinet at my dad's house, along with some of his guns. They pried the upper corner of the cabinet open with a standard 6-12" screwdriver and peeled back half the door. They got my Revolver and about 8 of his guns including a very nice Caspian Custom 1911. Mom and dad gave me one of the same cabinets at Christmas last year, but that will be getting moved and used for nothing more than ammo storage. We will both be purchasing actual safes if we can find the sizes, price range, and options we are looking for. I'll probably start a new thread asking for opinions on those.

One more word of advice, make a log of your serial numbers. When the cops showed up my parents had no record of the serial numbers on any of these. I was out of town at the time so unable to give the one for my revolver. Fortunately about 15 years ago I had made a list of model and serial numbers, while working on a boyscout merit badge. Was able to find that list and three of the stolen ones were on it, including an SKS that the cop was very worried about for some reason. We were able to find boxes for 4 others that we had bought in the time since, and ended up with only two of the nine that we didn't have a serial number for. We now have photographs of all our remaining guns and a word doc with makes, model, caliber, and serial number. Also made a list of all guns stolen with same information, and the case number for future reference. Will be making three copies on flash drives, one will be in my house, one in my parents house, and one in their safe deposit box. If I can get my hands on a copy of the case report that will be going on there as well.

Hopefully they catch the ****er recover most of our guns and put him under the jail.

yes, QUALITY gun safes are a MUST. Even fire can be a hazard so get one that has some good fireproof ratings.

log your guns, I did a full log list not to long ago with pics and an excel spreadsheet of my gun's make/model/caliber/serial/mods or scope/date purchased(this one is only on a few b/c some Idk). I have that folder of images password protected on my laptop, my parents laptop, my gf's laptop, and on a jumpdrive in a safety deposit box... You can never be to careful.
I even keep a good detailed log of my ammo, how many I have, what I've reloaded when, and on days I shoot a lot, I put that down to.

Do the pics/list of all things expensive: tools, guns, collectibles, etc. Not to long ago my dad's shop got broken into and they didn't have a list of tools... they just tried to remember it all and I'm sure that they forgot a good bit.

The crappy part about serial numbers is that it is really easy to remove them to resell in the 'hood...

Yep will definitely get a good fire safe, but will start a new thread on that if I feel the need.

I wouldn't even know where to begin with that one. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea though. One box of .45 APC was stolen along with dad's 1911, and it was reported to the police. Not sure, but I think all of the stolen hand guns were loaded. I know my 44 was. Could you imagine if a stolen gun/ammo was used in a future crime and they found our prints on a casing. Both of us are/were federal employees so our prints are on record. That would royally suck. Yep I might just have to add that to the next version of the log.

That would be almost impossible for our houses. We have no clue what's there and isn't anymore. They way stuff has gotten scattered, lost, broken, and replaced over the decades I doubt that either of us know what we have anymore.

Yea, but if it does turn up with serial numbers they are on record. That means that they get busted, and we get protected if used in a crime. Also means if they are recovered they might mike their way back to us. On the flip side if they turn up without a serial that's bad news for the person that has it then.

if you have a lot of guns and/or guns that are valuable. you need to insure them. most homeowners policies in NC will only cover up to $1500 if they get STOLEN only, that means flood, fire, etc is NOT covered. all you have to do would be schedule them for a set amount and then if anything happens, they're covered.

i hope the morons that stole your guns either shoot themselves with it or use the money they get from pawning them to buy drugs and overdose on them.

Not arguing but it is too bad there isn't a more definitive way to mark it as yours.

I have been known to make custom marks in hard to see places. In one way to mark that it is mine, I also put the date so in 50 years I know when I got it.

I did the same to my Ranger when I did the V8 swap :icon_thumby:

this is a good idea. on my guns, i usually take off the butt paid and either carve my initials, or put my b-day or the last 4 numbers of my SS# in there. that way, if it gets stolen and turns up i can say pull off the butt pad, you'll find this number or these initials inside the buttpad.

if it's almost impossible to log stuff that is valuable.....
y'all must not worry to much about it.. since it's scattered, broken, etc.
I'm not saying that in a 'mean' way...

log everything if you want records to go buy.
I have insurance on our guns and they are just regular hunting rifles and handguns, nothing special... but it's more $$ than the homeowners will cover.

Sorry should have clarified, I was talking about tools there. Most of our tools are an assorted collection obtained over the years, and thanks to a certain individual playing with dad's tools as he was growing up and not putting them back where they belonged... Now that I'm grown and a mechanic myself I better understand the value of those tools, but the workshop they belong in is in dire need of replacement. Once we get dad a new large workshop built, we will probably start organizing and rebuilding the tools collection starting with a larger better box.

As for electronics and other valuable in the house, we will get there. One step at a time, getting this gun inventory was a big step in the right direction. It's also a step that's about 15 years in the making. Started it with pen and paper when I was a boyscout, and though about taking it to this stage ever sense then. Just unfortunate that it took stuff being stolen to turn "thinking about it" into "doing it".

They will probably be looking to getting additional insurance to cover things, the homeowners certainly doesn't seem to be enough. Sounds like we might get paid for about half of what was stolen, if we luck up on some good deals for replacements. I should probably look into doing the same for my stuff, but for now I need to avoid raising my bills thanks to the upcoming federal furloughs.

There's far too much useful conversation going on in this thread! Let's get back to gun porn.

While we're talking .44s, here's mine.

Some specs on that AR please.

Thursday I picked up a replacement for my 44. Wanted another large caliber, but didn't want to get another 44 revolver this soon in case mine turns up somewhere. Doubt that it will, but I also couldn't find another 44 I wanted in my price range without a ported barrel. Been eying and thinking about getting a 1911 for a while so went with a .45 1911. I'll post some pics once I get it out and shoot it, but before I can do that I have to find some ammo. Unfortunately due to dad's 1911 being stolen I got three extra magazines, a Blackhawk paddle holster and a magazine holster for free. He didn't have any .45 ball, and I don't want to shoot up his good stuff practicing. He's still got a Taurus 45 to use it in. I should be able to find some by the weekend.
