Will the Taurus 3.0 swap into a Ranger? I have a locked up 3.0 from a Ranger and found a good deal on a Taurus 3.0. Are they the same engine? I have a feeling they are completely different engines but they are both the Vulcan engines, correct? Will this work?

They used two different 3.0 v6s in the Taurus. One will work and the other will not. The OHV Vulcan v6 is the one you want, and can work with some fairly minor changes. The DOHC Duratec 3.0 will not work which is a shame, but that's how the cookie crumbles.

One of these days I am going to build a DOHC 3.0 Ranger.

What kind of fairly minor changes are we talking about?

And one of these days I will watch that build thread like a hawk

Use the Ranger head gaskets, lower intake, exhaust manifolds and accessories.

The Oil pans are different between the Taurus and Ranger too, but I'm using the Taurus pan in my truck (2000 2wd) without any issues. Oil pan fitment may depend on 2wd vs 4wd, or I beam vs SLA front suspensions. Switching to the Ranger oil pan would guarantee it would fit properly.

I honestly don't think it will be all that hard. I might actually do it in by BII.

I'm just going to use Lincoln LS6 parts. They had a normally oriented 3.0 DOHC and a 5R55S trans. Right there it should be all but plug and play to a 97-2011 Ranger. You just need to get an Explorer trans and swap bell housing to the 3.0 if you want 4x4.

You might be right. I forget the LS exists most of the time.

Is your Taurus a DOHC or OHV engine?

Intake, accessories, and oil pan I can understand. Head gaskets? I need some more information. Do you have to swap heads? Is it just the short block that swaps?

I read somewhere that it was water flow that was the reason for the head gasket change. I'm not sure tho.

Heads are identical, so there's no reason to switch those. The gaskets should be swapped because the Taurus uses the engine in a transverse layout, so it has different cooling needs than when used in a longitudinal layout like the Ranger.

I've read some people claim that they've used the Taurus gaskets in a Ranger without issue, but no idea how long they were used without issue. There is a difference between Taurus and Ranger gaskets, and they're different for a reason, so switching to Ranger gaskets is "the right way" to do it.

Thanks for clearing that up, I really couldn't think of why to swap head gaskets
