Stupid 1354 low range questions..

Hello just had a few stupid (or maybe not so stupid) questions about the 1354 transfer case and low range. (I think the transfer case on the 90b2 is the 1354)

#1 how fast is a safe sustained speed in 4 low? ie. how fast can I go for how long?

#2 I have manual hubs, can I be in 4 low with the hubs disengaged (basically 2 low) for extended periods of time with out damaging the t case? (can I drive for hours in 4 low with the hubs off)

#3 is there any way to convert the transfer case to manual shift?

i have always been told low range is only for going no more than 15 but idk and i have used 4low without hubs locked in and my tcase is fine but im not sure if its good to

I don't see how running in 4lo would be bad for hubs but I could be wrong. I've gone up to 35 in 4lo but only for short periods of time. It's not much good for going fast.

Low range is for torque, not speed. I forgot to shift out once, in 5th gear she was screaming at 45, which was when I figured it out. I would not try to use it for extended periods, but as long as you aren't trying to go more than 15 to 20 MPH I don't see anything getting damaged.

As for the hubs, the transfer case has no idea what is going on with the hubs and it doesn't care. You won't break anything by being in "2 low". I used to do it all the time for driving around the yard.

On my early Rangers and my BII's and my early Toyotas I never held the speed to no more than 30 mph (going between 2nd and 3rd gear). A couple of times I need to get up a bit on the speed but it was for a short burst to about 45 mph. My owner’s manual told me about speed ranges in 4wd mode on my Toyotas but can't remember if it was mentioned in any of my Ford owner’s manuals. I always had locking hubs and they never gave me any problems going 25-30 mph.

Back when I lived 2 miles from work just for the hell of it I left it in 2lo for a week up to 45mph for half the drive, made it a little more fun :), yes, that was with the turbo engine too... Like said above, nothing cares, it's fine. About converting it to manual, the best way is to just get the manual version (when at the junk yard looking for donors, make sure the front output style matches what you have, the 1350 T cases have a slip spline front output and the slip splines are in the front drive shaft on the 1354's) and swap it in, the only other option other than custom linkages is the "shiftster" which costs twice what a junk yard manual transfer case will, and you would have to climb under the truck to shift it with the shiftster

1) about 2.5x slower than in high range. No problem.

2) Yes, you can drive without worries in 4-Lo with the hubs unlocked.

3) No. But if it works as an electric, why change it? Not a good use of money.
