Or do what we did in high school with front wheel drives: put cafeteria trays underneath the rear wheels, set the parking brake and go "drifting."

But seriously folks, the rear diff is already ruined, but wouldn't letting it freewheel instead of applying all that force from driveline give me a better shot at limping home?

Also if it does go tits up, I won't have to pull over and do the driveline then and there. I can do it right here where it's comfortable. Does that at least make half sense?

Even if you unhook the driveshaft everything still needs to spin to let the wheels roll. You might be better with engine torque as the engine will keep stuff spinning alot better then the weight of an empty ranger bed.

If it were me...id run it to the nearest uhaul places ..rent a truck and trailer...drive it on, strap it down, and haul ass.

U-Haul isn't an option at this point. I've got everything on bolted the front is free the center support is on bolted I cannot get it unstuck from the rear differential. Fudge!!! I just want to be home. Tonight.

If you're gonna do front wheel drive... pull the rear axle apart, remove the ring gear and clean it out really well and reassemble. That way just the axle shafts spin freely.

I got my '88 from a towing company. They said that the previous owner had been driving it around in front wheel drive for YEARS. The rear driveshaft broke and he just removed it and kept on going. I believe it, the front end was trashed.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! (Even the jokers)

The driveshaft was dislodged with a small log. Made it home under it's own power. Slowly.

I probably should have trailered it, but I was in the most desolate part of 101 in Norther California, and no Uhauls to be had up there.

It's lovely, but hard to believe it's the same 101 that runs from Santa Rosa to the Mexico. There are some new issues, and I'm going to put up a fresh thread.
