removing inner bearings

Hi all. I'm in the middle of replacing my front bearings on my 1992 RWD and can't figure out how to remove the inner bearing. I've got the rotor off, with everything removed except the races, and the inner bearing.

I thought that I had removed the grease seal, though there is clearly something keeping the bearing in place. What I removed was a small flexible rubber ring that came out very easily with pliers.

The new seals I bought are larger, and consist of a hard plastic outer ring, with soft rubber in the center. It does not look like I've got anything plastic still in my rotor but assuming I have left part of the seal in there, any advice on how to get it out?

On mine, all I had to do was to remove the grease seal and out came the bearing. Got a picture of what you are talking about?

On mine I was able to get a punch and a hammer and tap it out from the back side (worked great on both races). Mine is a 4X4 though, so it might be a little different.

I fought one side of my 4x4 hard, trying to pop the seal off with a hammer and a punch. I was just doing brakes and thought the bearing was good so I didn't want to drive on it. Eventually I folded the whole lip up and worked it over until I could pull it out with vice grips.

After letting me struggle with the one side Dad walked by, goes over and grabs a prybar (with the metal cap on the handle), and a cresant wrench. Taps the prybar between the seal lip and rotor, put the cresant wrench on the prybar shaft and turns it... pop the seal is off with no drama at all.

well I can't get any pictures just yet. But it really may be a moot point as I noticed my rotors seem awfully thin and wavy. I might just replace the whole thing. Thanks guys. I imagine I'll be posting a lot in this forum in the coming days.

Here's what I removed (on the left) next to the new part I bought. Looks like I managed to just pull a part of the inner seal.

Here's my rotor. You can see the lip keeping the bearing from being removed. But it sure seems like metal and a part of the rotor itself. I'd hate to start chipping away at it only to find it's not meant to be removed. These help?

It is a part of the seal, pry that baby out and get that bearing job done!

Here is what I do:

Remove the outer bearing preload nut, remove the outer wheel bearing roller. Reinstall the washer and nut on the spindle and then give the rotor a good yank outwards. The bearing and seal will pop right out of the back of the rotor. Pack and install new bearings and seal and reinstall.

Sasquatch's method ftw! When i was working for uncle sam we'd have competitions between teams, there was the service team that just did services and never worked outside the motor pool and there was the recovery team that worked on the side of the road. I was on the recovery team where we rarely had propper tools and had to get the job done asap. So every once in a while when i wasnt on the road we'd have these competitions, sometimes a complete service, sometimes a specific task. During one of these competitions to service all 6 hubs and brakes i had all 6 broke down before the service guy had one. I had the truck back on the ground before the service guy made his way to the front of the truck.

Sasquatches method became our sop.
