Hey all,

I've been doing research on front 4x4 axles and would like for you guys to post up your pictures.

I'm looking for axles that came out of Ford trucks from 1979 or EARLIER. Please try and post pics of the whole assembly, the pinion (so we can see if it's a high pinion or low pinion) and the steering knuckle (open or closed?).

I also want to see axles STILL IN THE TRUCK. If you know of a pre-1978 ford truck, please see if you can grab photos of the front axle as well as a picture of the truck and the year so we know what it came from. If you're lucky enough to have a salvage yard around you that still has some old trucks and hasn't sold them for the scrap, please grab some pics the next time you're there.

Some say the high pinion Dana 44 started in 1978. Some say 1973. Some say 1961. If been all over the net including Mr N's site. He has the best info and photos to back some of his info up.

This info is fading away and I want to create a reference library to go with the Dana 44 page I've been writing.

I think the early Ford driver side 1/2 ton axle's are most searched for by Ranger and Jeep owners. The fullsize resources don't document much on them because they're not looking for them. They either have them or have thrown them out for 1-tons.

I know there are people passing through this forum that have or have axcess to early Ford axles.

I'm also looking for photos of the driver side axles used under fullsize Jeeps like the Waggy D-44.

Lastly, I can always use pictures of Rockwell's, Unimogs or anything else you think might get put in a Rangers for later projects.

Thanks in advance for you're input!

I'll get the pics of 3 or 4 d44's I've got lyin around asap. 78-79 was the first year for the high pinion on 3/4 ton diffs, I've got a 74 1/2 ton axle thats high pinion with drum brakes but I'm not completely sure when high pinion started on half tons..

Cool. I've read in books and on the web that high pinion wasn't available until 1978. I know that the F250 got a high pinion in 1977.5, but the high pinions were in 1/2 tons prior to that. I'm hoping to get 'visual' proof.

I had a 72 F-150 and it had the HP D44 with drums. AFAIK it started around 1967 or so but don't quote me on that. 1972 for sure had it.

1977 F150 D44 with welded on wedges (changed to casted in 78) (this is high pinion)

modified to reposition lower coil mounts

close up of welded wedge

close up of wedge removed, this is not possible 78-79 Ford D44's

here is a pic showing the stock steering linkage (between the spindles) on a 77 f150 this was changed in 78

here is what the 78-79 steering (between the spindles) looks like bolted in, this is a much better design, with the 77 you have similar steering probs the stock linkage on RBV TTB's has when flexing

Take pictures, reduce them to a viewable size using the photo editing software of your choice (most cameras come with said software), post up pictures to a free host of your choice (photobucket.com is a good one), then link away...

here is my 1977 F150 D44 from above pics

it has now been narrowed 6"s on the pass side, removed the radius arm mounts and replaced with leaf spring mounts

i have also swapped out the Ford knuckles for a pair of 1975 Chevy D44 knuckles, caliper mounting plates and spindle hub. Reusing the Ford Rotor and hub unit. Machined Pass Knuckle and drilled/tapped for Hi-Steer.
