I was curious if I sourced a junkyard ranger 8.8 already equipped with say a 3.55 trac-loc rear end, could I buy new gears for it to match what I want (4.56 or 4.88) and still keep the trac-loc aspect of it, or would I have to buy a whole new limited slip pack for the new gears?

You can change your ratio while keeping the Traction-Lok diff, the same diff carrier gets used for all ratios on a 8.8".

I would recommend repalacing the clutches while you are in there though.

And don't forget the friction modifier.

Friction modifier the special lube additive?

I think that's good advice about the clutches. I think this is the route I'll head down. Just make sure I check the tags on diffs of the trucks at the junkyard.

Keep in mind, cars were equipped with 8.8" LS (Trac-loc) too. So, you can broaden your search now.

Oh, and some yards I've been to charge less for parts pulled off of cars. Ex: I pulled ventilated brake drums off of a mid-'90s Lincoln Continental (8.8") and paid $10 a piece, rather than double that if they had come off of an F-150 or bigger.

The "Friction modifier" is to make the oil "more slippery".

the point of this is to allow the clutches top slide smoothly to prevent "chatter"

After long consideration of this I decided that I didn't care if the clutches chattered
when they slipped if it meant that they would slip more easily (and that is EXACTLY what the stuff does)

So I do not run friction modifier in my axle.
