Picked up a new distributor from Carquest. They swear its a direct replacement but problem is the module on it is black. I had just replaced the TFI on the old one but had the same issue (random dieing, tach jumping after dieing) should I swap the modules or run with the black one? I know originally there was a difference between the two, but in the aftermarket world....who knows?

I think all the 2.9ls used the grey TFI modules, 1986 to 1992

The 3.0l used the black ones 1991-1994

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
That's not a Motorcraft module, who knows if the color is a factor. If you swap modules will it void the distributor warranty?

Good question. Did they simply use black plastic to make the module, or is it a later year model like @RonD mentioned. Here's a web page on the subject.

The last few paragraphs have some very useful information regarding the differences between the two types of modules.
Exactly! Went ahead and swapped the modules. Talked to the CQ guy who told me he would still honor the warranty, better safe than sorry!
