Personally, I would let it rev more before shifting. My auto usually doesn't shift until 2800-3200 rpm; unless I'm getting on it a little, then it shifts later yet.

I'm running stock 4.10 gears with a slightly larger than stock tire (265 75 R16 vs. 245 75 R16).

I'm running 3.73's w/30x9.5, average about 22mpg highway, 19mpg mixed driving. I've found that lugging the 3.0l doesn't help get better fuel economy, it's likes rpms. My truck sees 3500-4000rpm daily driving it easy.

Idk what the things is about mine, i get 25 on the highway and i get about 10.5-11.5 city not sure what it is i know a lot of it is how hard you pump it in the city but i keep it low on the acceleration just enough for it to shift through gears very smooth. ill probably just fork out the money for a tune up and then see how it goes, it may just be something with the 98...

what you could try is if you have an overdrive off switch or button turn off overdrive when in the city like alot of stop and go and see if that helps and you can use it when under 25mph. thats what my transmission guy told me

I checked on http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm which is pretty accurate, and all the 3.0 Rangers 98 to present get between 16 and 21 mpg .
2wds get about 4-5 mpg more than 4x4's
and sticks get 1-2 mpg more than autos
