So I'm looking for my next purchase for my build. And figured I'd get the gears and lockers out of the way. So I'm working with a Dana 44 out of a 78 f150 and an 8.8 out of a 98 explorer. I'm widening the 8.8 to match the width up front with custom shafts to match the bolt pattern.

So now on to the lockers. Im set on an Eaton truetrac up front and Eaton elocker in the rear. What is your guy's opinion about that setup? Or should I do a truetrac both front and rear? Due to the fact that I do not have any real reason for a selectable locker. How would you guys set it up if you were in my shows?

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
in a 4x4....a posi over any type of locker is a waste of traction.

a selectable locker is king. period.

for general driving i would rather have a open diff on dry roads to maximize tire life, ride and handling in normal driving and minimize wear on everything.. only time i want max traction, i want to be able to opt for it.

due to my main climate, a selectable locker up front is ideal with a locker out back.

your situation likely requires something else. but if your going to spend money, buying a posi is a waste in my eyes.

Why in the hell would you widen an explorer 8.8? Just get one out of an F150......same 31 spline....and the proper bolt pattern for your D44 already...

As for the truetrac...just a glorified limited slip.

Rear axle a Detroit or Yukon Grizzly locker

Front if you want selectable ARB and the Yukon Zip are king.

What I was thinking... :dunno:

Since the stock D35 and 8.8" apparently weren't up to your uses, it only seems obvious true lockers are the only way to go here.

Agreed, ARB or Zip Lockers. No handling quirks, works everywhere (street, snow, ice, dirt, sand, mud, rocks, blah, blah).

I have a Detroit in the rear of my truck and it works great on and off road. No odd wear pattern and it works period.

For the front a limited slip out selectable locker is the better option in my opinion.

Thank you guys. And what year f150 should I look for to get a 31 spline 8.8?

'87-'96 F-150 or Bronco.

Some '83-'86 trucks have the 8.8" also (I6 & 302 trucks IIRC), but these have a weaker stock carrier. If you put an ARB, Detroit, etc. in it, then this won't matter. The 9" is found under '83-'86 351 trucks (and all engines prior to '83).

Honestly not enough time to even be on here right now or do research. So those years will have a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern? Once again thank you guys!

Have any of you guys ran an Aussie locker front and back? What was your setup? I plan to run a Dana 44 front and rear.
