Could that be due to differences in spline counts?
that's what i was thinking, that and the diameter of the axle shafts. so how could you use the same bearings on 2 different carriers?

I don't think so. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the shaft outer diameter is the same, just a different spline count. As well as the axle tube is larger (having nothing to do with it), but that's the two main differences.

31 and 28 spline 8.8 shafts are different diameter. I want to say off the top of my head 31 spline is 1.31" and 28 is well I don't know but I do know its smaller.

If you are referring to the carrier bearings, yes they are interchangeable between 28 and 31 spline. The bore the shaft goes through on the 28 and 31 is the same I.D. and O.D. thus the bearings don't care what shaft goes through the bore.

As for the running a 28 spline carrier in a 31 spline housing all you should have to do is swap out the side gears.

Thanks again Todd! Your input has been well noted. This thread has been a huge help! I can't wait to get started:icon_cheers:

here's the EX carrier (on left) and ranger carrier. the bearings are the same size, as well as the hole on either end. the cross pin hole is a little smaller on the ranger (1/2" or 5/8") the Ex one is either 3/4" or 7/8", so i'll probably run that one.
the ranger carrier still looks a little shorter than the ex carrier (to me)

i took out the pinion bearings as well, same part # M88048 (a timken)

and the pinions, (the 373 is on the right)

anybody make any progress this weekend???

i got both ring gears off, switched out the pinion bearings, been comparing pretty much everything i take out. as far as i can tell, the only difference in 31 and 28 splines is:

-spline count, obviously
-the outer spider gears that go on the axle shafts
-cross-pin
-width of the carrier (a little thinner, as you can see in the pic above)
- diameter of axle shafts

the c-clips are even the same

i used a small mallet and a 1/2"x1/2"x4" piece of rectangular steel stock to get the ring gears off. worked great. just went around the ring gear tapping it, popped right off eventually.

i got the outer bearing on the carrier pretty dirty tho, so i've decided to replace them as well. i gotta go get a puller from autozone so i can remove them.

more good news, my 20% discount card still works from when i worked at auto-bone, woohoo

i'll check it out DG....

mine is temporarily on hold, i've decided to go with a crush sleeve eliminator from randy's ring and pinion, and they're $31.xx with shipping/tax.....just for a little ass piece of metal

I tried to install the crush ring on the new pinioon shaft, but there wouldn't be enough threads for the nut to screw on all the way...

ANYBODY GOT AN IDEA WHAT'S UP?

yours truly, doorgunner
maybe you didnt crush it enough??? you are talkin about the crush sleeve (and pinion nut), right? if i've understood my research correctly, you have to crush it a certain amount to get the distance between the pinion and the ring right. you keep torquing it down until it is right, if you over tighten, you have to start over.

that's why i'm goin with the crush sleeve eliminator, takes a bit of the guess work out of it, plus you can reuse them
