hey guy, 90 ranger supercab 4.0 m5od tranny 4x4

when i am driving down the road it will start to sputter like its running out of gas, gets real jerky then it will smooth itself out once its warmed and only do it occasionally, always does it when you need more going up a hill.

on another note might not be related when i am driving and take my foot off the gas in any gear it will sort of "slip" out of gear, rpms go down to about 1000 but the shifter is still engaged, i can give it some gas and when it hits the rpms it should be at it re-engages itself into the gear???

Sounds like some bad ju-ju going on inside that trans, it should stay engaged in gear any time the shifter is put into a gear. Not sure why yours is popping out and then popping back in like that.

Does reverse work ok?

Sounds almost like something in your trans is working like a Sprag and letting it slip when in coast. If that is actually what is happening you probably won't have reverse.

Think kinda like a torx bit that has been stripped in one direction. You damaged one side of the star, but because of the shape of it, the teeth still engage ok going the other direction.

Reverse works fine,
