Don’t the little midget racers run them? Some kind of dirt track thing iirc.
Today, the word “midget” is considered a derogatory slur. The dwarfism community has voiced that they prefer to be referred to as dwarfs, little people, people of short stature or having dwarfism, or simply, and most preferably, by their given name.

The Ranger has in many ways been though or and treated as an after thought by Ford.

While not always a bad thing, off the shelf engines have been a thing with Rangers from pretty much the beginning. Some engines are/were better suited for truck use than others.

The Vulcan and Cologne engines were not originally built with a truck in mind. Opinions will vary but the 3.0 has probably been one of the worse matches of the different engines that have been put in the Ranger.

None of them have been powerhouses and have been adequate for the job to the most part but nothing more. Even the 4.0 SOHC has been found wanting.

The 2.3 ecoboost has been, perhaps the first good match to the vehicle, maybe. Time will tell how it holds up.

There are some options out there for upgrades on the Cologne engines and not much of anything for the 3.0.

The 3.0 is a sedan and station wagon engine. So, there wasn’t much of a market to do much with it. The 3.0 is a reliable engine and will get you from point A to point B. That is all it was ever meant to be and it fills that role adequately.

Yes they are a pretty standard motor for 4 cylinder sprint cars.

Several companies make them 100% new for racing.

Yep, they are still one of the main engines for 4 cylinder sprint cars, some classes REQUIRE the 2.3 lima since you have to purchase the engine from the track.. Also popular in outlaw stocks.
Yeah, that's it, the ones with the big thing on the roof.

Midget racing is also a form of car racing. Also is a model of MG car.

Actually most tracks stop saying midgets and just use the more specific term of quarter sprint, or three quarter sprint (theres a bunch of sizes from motor cycle engine powered sprints to big blocks). The "midgets" were the 2 of the smallest class of sprints.

They used to come to the county fair, nobody really knew what to call them so they were midget racers.

Eventually people got tired of the noise and kinda ran them out of town... and like 20 years ago that was the end of that.

I raced a 3/4 midget for half a season many years ago. Really fun cars, they will run over 120mph on dirt. I was too big for the damn thing though and we had to move the shifter outside the roll cage and use a hand clutch and shorten the steering shaft so much I was basically steering with my left knee. :icon_rofl:

We have 3 tracks around me so Im big into racing... except nascar crap.

I was actually just blowing you shit with the NOS comment lol.

We got a forklift at the shop with a propane fired 2.3, like most 2.3s you can beat it on foot :ROFLMAO:

I always wanted to get into some sort of dirt track racing...but never really tried. Did run some demo derbys if that counts lol.

There's not much difference between a demo derby car and an outlaw stock class dirt car. Just add some safety features but otherwise its completely stock. They are slow and boring to watch but its a cheap easy way to get into dirt track racing. Most of them are 80s monte carlos, think any 2 door square body cars that had small block v8s in the 70s and 80s. Get good, make some money and move up to factory stock...

Thanks to every one who seemed to correct my statements about the 3.0 Vulcan. Even though I don't think I was wrong in any way, shape, or form. As a long time Ranger owner/Driver, most of my wrenching has been on the 3.0 Vulcan motor. I would not say I'm an expert at all, but I know my way around a 3.0. I don't know anything about a cologne, duretec or lima. OK? I just said it (3.0 vulcan) was an oddball motor, and that the Vulcan has no siblings. It is the only motor in the Vulcan family, whereas the Lima and Cologne motors have more than one.

I ran arena style first in a 77 monaco 4dr with a 318, then a 75 LTD with a 351M. Dont think either of those woulda fared well in those classes lol.

That old LTD was tough, ran it 2 seasons at 3 different fairs and got it to the final heat in the last one where i got tangled up with a big ol chrysler new yorker. We fought valiantly but it was to no avail lol
