Looking for the correct head bolt torque specs. 01 vin u 3.0 tty bolts. Just snapped a fel pro bolt off in the block with the sequence I thought to be correct. If anyone could link a manual or something I would greatly appreciate it.

I hope it snapped where you didn’t have to fight to get it out!

1994 Ford shop manual specifies:
Torque to 59 lb-ft
back off 1 turn
Torque to 37 lb-ft
Torque to 68 lb-ft

Haynes shop manual states:
Above is for years 1993 - 1998

1999, 2001 - 2008:
Torque to 37 lb-ft
back off 1 turn
Torque to 22 lb-ft
Turn 90 degrees additional
Turn 90 degrees additional a 2nd time

That is the first time I have seen a tty spec with more than 90 degrees rotation after the specified torque.

The other thing to make sure of is that the threads are clean and there is a little lube on the threads so they turn without binding.

Yes, in 1999 Ford changed the 3.0l head bolt type to TTY and they are longer than the 1998 and earlier bolts

First make sure you have a 2001 Block, the head bolt holes will have the threads recessed in the block
It looks like this: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/images/3_0-build/3.0build20.jpg

If the threads come to the top then someone swapped in an older block and you need to use the shorter head bolts and the 1993-1998 tightening sequence

The heads were exactly the same, year to year, changes were in the block and length of head bolts

Head bolts seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/images/3_0-build/3.0build14.jpg
Top one is for 1999 and up, almost 6" long
Shorter one is just under 4.5"

So match the block and match the bolts

EDIT: this is what the manual said in 2005, it appears things have changed since then to TTY specs.

from the Ford 2005 manual, Ranger
4 steps

tighten to 59 lb-ft
loosen 1 full turn
tighten to 37 lb-ft
tighten to 68 lb-ft

EDIT:

1995 FORD Taurus manual says the same for the 3.0

What do the instructions (if any) that came with the new bolts say???

I used the 90 degree method the first time but the specs I was seeing were 59lb, loosen, 40lb, 90, 90. That must have been the issue. I dont know why there are so many different specs out there.

From what I've gathered across many forums so far, the the sequence with a final torque # is for solid bolts and tty bolts use the 90 degree method.
I used 37lb-ft, loosen 90 degrees, 22lb-ft, tighten 90 degrees, tighten additional 90 degrees. No issues that time around.

EDIT: Ford shows just 1 bolt type from 7-13-98, so at some point they must have consolidated the bolt s applications.
the rest of this post is an example of "what was, but isn't anymore" (
maybe)

just when you thought it was safe to torque some head bolts.....

this is from a Chiltons, 2000-2011 Ranger. it seems there may be different sequences for different years.
2005 is a standout from the TTY bolts, according to this manual.

anybody have actual Ford manuals for the various years to verify this?

are there any service bulletins from Ford since 2005 that change this info????

my 2005 Ford manual matches this. So does the 1995 Taurus manual.

None of that makes any sense???

Ford change the 3.0l Block in 1999 and switched to longer TTY heads bolts
So wouldn't make much sense to start using different specs

TTY bolts hold better, but there is another reason they are used, in assembly plants it costs time and money to have torque wrench machines calibrated daily, but a computerized system can do 90deg easily every time, with no calibration

But I have to say I truly do not know as far as the 3.0l Vulcan

that's why I'm asking for others with manuals to chime in.
the Chilton chart seems to indicate Ford switched from torque to yield, back to torque, then back to yield,,, I think?

EDIT : things changed. I do think it would be interesting to see what the manuals said when they were printed.

Tasca parts show the head bolt as F8DZ-6065-AA from 7-13-98.
it's listed as fitting everything thru 2008, including 2005.
so, I guess I'd better put a note in my 2005 manual.
