this is a great read about how the cummins came to be in the dodge....

here is a quote that interested me...remember this is the early 80's

They even had several running in test cars and trucks. Cummins invited us to visit and drive a Ford E350 van with their 3.9-liter, four-cylinder, B-series engine.

the relatives are basic to any body that wants to swap a powertrain.

i for one cringe about the ignorance ford had shown in this:annoyed:...horrible judgement....but what to expect from guys that came up with the montego and granada...they rolled on through the 80's and come up with the modular program too:shok: yaaaaay.

its worth the read if you like to swap powertrains, which i assume is why a guy would sniff around in here.

On the other hand if it wasn't for Cummins there probably wouldn't be Dodge.
:icon_twisted:

And oddly if it wasn't for JI Case who co-opted the design of the 5.9 with Cummins there probably wouldn't be a 3.9/5.9 either... to add to the confusion they bought out the ag line of IH shortly afterwards whose truck line supplied engines for Ford. Kindo of a funky circle type thing goin on there.

Stereotypcally IH was well known for their engines, nothing else out there could really keep up with them. Their farm engines were (IMO) overly complex but they sounded great and would eagerly take lots of fuel screw turning... not really THAT bad of a call. In Ford's spot in the late 70's they would have been one of my first calls. In '81 the article says Ford was already in a commited relationship with Navistar while the B series didn't come out until '84 (and Dodge didn't get them underhood until '89)

Sounds like it was more bad timing on Ford's part than anything, Dodge bumbled around not knowing what to do and fell on a good thing.

I think Fiat would love to kick Cummins to the curb and use one of their own engines in the pickups but they are afraid to. They did just that in the CaseIH line that they also own (circled back around didn't it :icon_twisted:)

I skimmed through it, looks like a good read I will save for tonight. :icon_thumby:

Reading the first article in that link made me realize these big companies run much like the federal and state governments. They are so big and have so many departments, I am surprised they get anything done. How can you even consider swapping in a diesel engine into your Ranger? From that linked article, don't you realize how much engineering and people it takes to do something like that? It would be impossible for one guy or gal to do all that and actually get it running a driveable. :)

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Bobby seems to do things like that as easily as an office person would click on the diesel engine icon and drag it onto the image of the Ranger on his desktop screen.
