I have a 98 Ford ranger 2WD 4 cylinder SOHC 8 spark plug engine I took the AT out my self and had it fully rebuilt I put it back in and bolted it in and then the crank wouldn't rotate to put the TC bolts on flexplate so I loosened the bolts to the transmission and it slid back about a half inch then I was able to slide the TC in all the way bolted it back and crank spins freely then I proceed and hook every think up and start it and it runs everything sounds normal but when I put it in drive or reverse I dont feel it engage and the tires don't move at all. Is it possible i fried the pcm by unplugging the tranny electrical with out disconnecting the battery. I dont think it has anything to do with the TC not being set in all the way at first what could it possibly be? The AT is a 4R44E please contact me if I didnt give enough information. Thanks ranger station

Few????

Did you force the trans to bolt to the engine after rebuild?

If so, you could of damaged the pump, hence no engagement

Did you fill the torque converter itself and then the trans?

If not, you coulda fried the converter before it got filled via the trans pump.

I don't think it would have anythin to do with not disconnectin the battery, but then again, I haven't messed with any of the computer controlled trannys either.:icon_twisted:

As far as tightening the bell housing to then engine It fit together quite easily the TC just needed slid back a eighth of an inch so I couldn't see that breaking anything internally the TC was already filled and then i put ATF in AT then started it up and it won't engage at all if I put it in neutral I can spin Tue drive shaft easily by hand and it locks in park. Thanks for getting back so soon

After starting the truck did you check the fluid level?
the trans will suck the pan dry to fill the internals
also you are using mercon V (5) right?

on a rebuilt trans is about 9qts. that includes the 2 for the converter.

add 2 more then check it.

3qts is just for the pan.

If its low enough on fluid, you will not have any engagement.
