I am looking at a ranger to buy and the guy selling it says it need a new drivers side front axle shaft, wheel bearings, caliper, and rotor. do i need to replace the axle shaft to drive home in 2wd? I guess what im asking is, is the axle shaft needed for driving in 2wd or can i drive without it?

You can drive it just fine. As long as your rear axle shafts are good! :icon_twisted:

You'll probably need to do the bearings, rotor and caliper before driving it..but if you do all that work, the axle shaft is only another 5 minutes to replace at that point. You just unbolt the spindle and slide the old one out and a new one in. (I guess that'll depends on where it's busted tho.)

That isn't what he said.

If your wheel bearings are bad you MUST replace them.

If the "spindle" is bad you've already disassembled it far
enough to replace the axle shaft.

I think more likely what he's calling the "Axle shaft" is REALLY the spindle because he mentions "Bad wheel bearings"

Sounds to me like he burned up a set of wheelbearings.
