I have a question! Can you guys help me. Do any of you know what 4.0 engines will interchange with each other? I have a 1994 ranger with the 4.0 in but it's junk. I am trying to find one that has some what low miles on it. But I haven't been able to find one from a 94 that would have that. What years of explores would match also?

this will answer your question, I had to read it a few times to make sure I was understanding it correctly but I wass able to figure out what motors will interchange with my stock 93 4x4 4.0L.

basically if your OBD 1 find an OBD 1 engine
same thing goes for OBD2.

hope this helps.

kryptonitecb doesn't speak for the rest of us.

The '90 to '00 4.0l should be fine to use as long as it is the OHV type, '90-'92 has slightly less horsepower.
The 4.0l OHV engine was produced until 2000 and was used in the Ford Explorer, Ford Aerostar, Mazda B4000 and Ford Ranger.

You are basically just swapping out the block and heads so you just need to stick with the OHV type 4.0l.
In '98 the Rangers were switched to the SOHC 4.0l

Most swaps are from a smaller engine to a 4.0l so won't apply to your project, i.e. changing wiring harness and computer.
You can swap any non-matching parts from your original 4.0l to the new one.
So it should be pretty straight forward.
I would replace the rear main seal on any used engine, low miles or not :)

Finding a low mile 4.0l is another story, lol.
Have you priced out a rebuild

In 98 the SOHC became optional in the Explorer. The Ranger didn't get a SOHC until 2000.
