This post will describe how to make your own fuel filter disconnect tool for 1998-2000 Rangers and Explorers, and/or vehicles that use the same size and design of retainer clips on the fuel filter. See steps below:
*This method is simply an alternative to using the fuel line disconnect tool you can purchase from an auto parts store or an authorized dealership. The use and construction of this tool is done at your own risk. I nor TRS shall be held liable for any damages or injury caused from the use of this tool.
- Depressurize the fuel system by removing fuel cap
- Apply parking brake
- Place vehicle on jacks and properly chock the wheels
- Measure distace between the end of the fuel retaining connector and canister portion of existing fuel filter while still on vehicle
- Take the top of a standard Sharpie* brand cap, and cut it to that size...maybe a little smaller for ease of use
- Once cut, cut cap from end to end on one side to aid in applying it around fuel line
- Push end of cap into the fuel line connector with a small tool such as a flat-head screwdrive or pair of needle nose pliers
- Push until a slight "click" sound is heard; meaning the clips inside have been disengaged
- Push the cap towards the connector, while taking your free hand to push the connector towards the cap
- Once the clips have been fully disengaged, remove the fuel connector and apply method to other side
