My credo
JESUS Loves Ya!
Yup it needs a carbed 302.

That's why I hate the older computer controlled vehicles.

Anything is great until it breaks. But electronics are something not everybody can fix. I just don't like how everything on modern vehicles are controlled by something electronic.

Sorry for the thread jack...btw where were you on this build?

I've been working on the car. Close to having it on the road.

Still need to find out whats wrong without throwing a bunch of money at it. But I'm spending as much in gas as a co-worker with a V8 Explorer.

Ok so I looked up some wiring diagrams to see what my options are. I was hoping to be able to find a different ignition module to wire in.

So here's the wiring for the 2.3

I don't think splicing the coils together and using a TFI will work after looking at this TFI to DIS swap
http://www.merkurxr4ti.com/ref/dpdis_wiring_mods.PDF

Maybe a 4.0 EDIS?

Or maybe run a distributor? Or maybe fork over the $100 or so for a new DIS module?

That's a twin coil EDIS system, right?

A 4.0 EDIS won't work. It's the same as sticking an 8-cyl TFI in a 2.9, it will cause random misfires and make it run like crap if at all.

I would be focusing on that lean code. Lean codes are set by excessive oxygen seen in the exhaust stream, which will make it dump fuel.

Check spark and fuel pressure, make sure you have no intake or exhaust leaks, and then look at the O2 sensor and its circuit. An analog volt meter would be best for checking a sensor operation.

Thats interesting to know. I am running a TFI from a 3.0 on the 5.0 Focus. Think I should try to find a 5.0 one?

I have never run the wrong TFI on a given engine myself, but I have discussed this with my shop foreman. What I have been told is that the strategy burnt onto them is different for different numbers of cylinders, so they are specific as far as 4/6/8 cyl goes, and I would assume this would produce a random misfire situation.

If the Focus is running ok like that, then leave it be. If you are having rough running issues, then yes, I would def try getting a V8 TFI on it before anything else.

So there's a chance I may have figured it out. I did some research and found out that the ground wire to the O2 is a common cause for bad MPGs on the 2.3 and 2.9. So I ran a new ground to it. I started it and let it run for about 5-10 minutes. Idled good and no CEL. It usually came on within 30 seconds of starting it.

We'll see how it does on the morning drive.

Drop in bed liners are good for some things. They do protect the metal from impact much better than a spray in liner.

I have had a drop in liner in mine since it was new. I need to take it out and look soon. I have to admit that I am fairly scared about what I will find.
