I've installed new u-joints and got new outer axle seals for my front axles. The pictures below show the seal on the axle (it is not fully pressed on yet). The picture with the spindle. I'll assume the large diameter end of the seal fits into the recess on the back of the spindle after everything is installed. I'll assume the seal lip is pressed up against the back surface of the spindle? Should I smear some grease on the back of the spindle so when the lip rides against it will not damage the seal? With the spindle stationary and the axle shaft spinning when in use I'd think there should be some kind of lubrication. Am I thinking this out correctly?

Thanks,

You are correct, they ride on the inside of the spindle. I would coat it lightly with wheel bearing grease.
