Serious? Your comparing a vue to a ranger and worried about usable bed space? Whats the towing capacity of the vue versus the ranger, space problem solved. Get the ranger.

Well..Of course I'm going to say get the ranger.

However, my wife and I just bought an 08 vue with the good ol ecotec 4 banger in it. Bought it with 80K for 13k even.
A very nice little truck (uhh...cuv I mean) but very much a mall cruiser.....The build quality from 08 just seems much much better than the older ones IMHO. Its based off of an opel. I dont think you'll go wrong with one...Very smooth comfortable rides.

The Vue is shared platform. GM also built the Pontiac Torrent and Chevrolet Equinox from it:

To say parts are going to dry up on the Vue is a bit of a stretch. If we want to take it a step further, isn't 2011 the last year for the Ranger? Will parts dry up for it?

Not taking one side over the other here, just pointing out flaws in the argument.

I look at the Vues tonight. If neither are a go, I'll be calling the dealer on the Ranger in the morning.

Well, I'm stuck. Drove both Vues:

* The white '07 is tight, rattle free and clean. 54k miles. New tires - still have the paint stripe on the tread. Got it down to $15,900. Might take $15,500.

* The silver '06 is tight, has a strut rattle up front, and is cleaner than the '07. The struts I'm not all that concerned about, my son and I can do them, if I can't get the dealer to. 68k miles. Tires are 75%. $13,566.

* The '01 Ranger...needs nothing except a replacement cover for the tonneau. Has nearly new rubber. About $11k.

I hate car shopping...

Need SERIOUS opinions, guys, not just 'buy it because it's a (fill in the maker).

I know how I'm leaning, I just need to read some opinions.

i say ranger being its lower priced ready to go with nothing to work on seemingly other then the cover and its something that your very know familiar with and can know what to expect from it.

How reliable is the turn-the-button 4WD? What should I be on the lookout for? I have never had a 4x4, and I'm needing real advice from people that know.

$2566 buys a lot of fuel to make up the difference in fuel economy. And you get a real 4x4!

Here's my take. As you may as well know I just bought a chevy, so I am not so brand loyal anymore.

I've owned two rangers. One was a 2001 4.0L XLT 4x4 with the automatic. In the winter the mileage was horrible. 14MPG tops. In the summer it got around 18-19. I doubt you will EVER see anything over 20MPG with a 4.0L 4WD Automatic. I then had a 1999 Ranger Regular cab with the 3.0L auto 4WD and it averaged about 14-15. Yeah, I know, and it was slow to boot!

I don't know anything about the VUE's so I can't say much about them. However, I do know the 2001 Ranger's with the 4L had timing chain tensioner cassette issues. Google "SOHC timing chain rattle" and spend a few days reading. Mine had the problem, Ford split the cost with me, and by the time I traded it in 20K later the rattle was coming back.

Edit: Any ranger 2001 up with the electric shift has a track record of being very reliable as far as it shifting into and out of 4wd. It is nothing like the 1998-2000 which were nothing but trouble. The 2001 up has no lockout hubs, so when you shift into 4wd it only has to lock the transfer case into gear.
