Went to this very nice older lady’s house to buy her late husbands 93 Ford Explorer (which is in great condition) and she offered me something I couldn’t pass up!
She had a couple old (1991-1992) Daihatsu Rocky’s sitting there and asked if I wanted them… uhh yeah! These things are not the greatest or the fastest, but they were priced just right.
The white one was her daily driver and she is the second owner since it was 2 years old. She had originally bought it in Hawaii and had it shipped State side. She had driven it for years till the repairs became too much for her. She parked it inside her garage and there it sat for 10 years untouched!
At one point she picked up a parts vehicle for it that ran And drove when she bought it!
Long story just a little longer, I ended up draining the fuel, checking plugs, cap and rotor, pouring marvel mystery oil in the plug holes, putting a battery and fresh fuel in and to my surprise IT STARTED!
Been driving it around all weekend teaching my son to drive a manual and even the wife!

My credo
Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.

Why should I pay someone else to screw it up when I can screw it up myself for free?
Wow, nice find! I see a few still on the road, often towed behind a motor home.

I didn't even know that Daihatsu even sold road vehicles in the US. We had a few on base as utility vehicles as well as some Cushmans that never left the base but I've never seen any on the road.

wait, I think I might have a transmission for one of those things... does it look like this?

In my haste like 9 years ago when I was working on my Tracker looking for a transmission I pulled this from a junkyard... haven't been able to even figure out what I pulled it from since...

Transmission or Transmogrifier? It is important.

It is quite the unit, it at least has that convenient carry handle at the top... :).

Sometimes I miss the Tracker, but it was cramped and everything was so fragile... was a hoot though being so nimbly bimbly with near the same hp as my '97 Ranger and only like 2200lb... I imagine the Rocky is similar but just less HP most likely...

Yeah they aren’t powerhouses that’s for sure, but decent fuel mileage (compared to my 6.0 powerstroke) and 4wd… I can’t really complain. These things weigh about 2700 +\- so still not horrible

Got her on the lift today, everything checks out.
Balljoints and steering is all tight, all fluids are topped off, oil changed and air filter done! Putting tires on it this week and I’ll be cruising!

Putting some “new to me” tires on the daihatsu !
Going from 215/75/15 to 235-75-15.
Little bigger and a lot more aggressive!
Will get pics when it’s done…. I’ll be using my recently purchased tire machine lol 😝
