I loaned out my 3,000 watt generator out to a friend who was out of power for several days, he was glad to get it for sure. Could run some space heaters and such to keep the house above freezing.
Note that while plugging a refrigerator into a generator is easy, rigging your furnace blower to run off one is not. Would have to have at least some rudimentary knowledge of household electric current to back-feed the furnace motor (and you'd have to have natural gas or propane for the furnace, 2,000 watts nowhere near enough to run a heat pump, the 7-something kwatt option probably is).
