What do you stock guys run in the way of tires? I want to run some mud terrain/snow tires on my 88. It has some pussy 235 street tires on it now.They are larger than stock (215) but I wanted to keep the same size or a little bigger say 30 9.50 but I am unsure what to get.

If it is not going to be seeing much pavment, then I saw either Swamper's, or Boggers.

If it's going to be seeing pavment, then BFG M/T's. Or even BFG A/T's for taht matter.

It will see alot of pavement. But I really want some mud terrains. I was thinking about some firestone destinations.

I have 30 x 9.5 Pirelli Scorpion AT's. I got them on sale for $75 a tire and I love them. I have definitely got my money's worth. I went everywhere my buddy's jeep with swampers went, I just had to work harder to get there.

Keep in mind "mud tires" typically don't do super well in the hard pack snow because they lack siping, an aggressive AT would be better for snow.

that is VERY true but also depends on how the roads are taken care of (sand, rock salt, chemicals, NOTHING). if you get a significant amount of ice on your local roads i do NOT recommend running swampers or basic MT tires UNLESS you get a set of chains for the really icy days. i have been running through everything in my path (we got 10-12 inches in the past 24 hrs) with my 33 inch TSLs and a mini spooled rear BUT i am a few marbles short and have a 1ton on call if i screw up.

Yeah, it takes hardly any throttle at all for me to break both of the BFGs loose in the hardpack, granted I have a 4.0 but still, many times I was being very gentle and still going sideways when trying to accelerate at 30+MPH.

you can run whatever you want just be aware of the pitfalls of each kind of tire.

Every tire has a pitfall of some type.

A nice cheap mud tire is Dunlop Radial Mud Rover..but that's about all they're good for. I really liked my Toyo Open Country A/T's on my 99 Ranger, they took me everywhere (mud, snow, rain, etc). They're a bit spendy though, roughly $130 a tire (I think).

i am use to it. my tired old 2.9 does OK with the 33s and 456s due to it being a mini spool you just get use to it driving it while drifting... not to mention since its always engaged you dont have any "locking IN" then drifting issues. i have had to put it in 4wd MANY times in the snow because of the terrible ice traction with the TSLs.

I've got the old style Cooper STTs (similar to Dunlop Mud Rovers) and they sucked a big one in all the snow Seattle had a few weeks ago. Even being locked F/R I could break them free with just a little throttle. My buddies running open/open with BFG A/Ts more or less owned me on more than one occasion. They're great in the mud though.

I think HahnsB2 was trying to get at this, but mud and snow are very different..

If you want a good snow tire, bfg mud terrains are NOT the way to go. For mud/off road however, they can't be beat. (swampers aside)

Michelin LTX M/S <mild snow, ice, mild mud, street, off-road> (the one I run)
Michelin LTX A/T2 <mod snow, mod mud, off-road>
Destination A/T <mild snow, mild mud, off-road, street>
Destination LE <mild snow, mild mud, ice, street, off-road>
BFG Rugged trail <mild snow, mild mud, street, off-road
BFG Long Trail T/A <mod snow, mod mud, street, off-road>
BFG Long Trail Tour <mild snow, mild mud, ice, street>
BFG All-Terrain KO <mod snow, mod mud, off-road>
Uniroyal Larado AWP <mild snow, mild mud, street>
Unroyal Larado Cross Country <mild snow, mild mud, street, off-road>

ice = water sipes in tread design
mud = open lug pattern
snow = open lug pattern with serrations
street = quite, longer wear
off-road = suited to off-roads needs (gravel, dirt, anything besides asphalt)

mild = up to 4" ~ 6"
mod = up to 6" ~ 8"

Just a few that will work.
