Hello,

A broken New Jersey fuel pump overfilled my gas tank a couple days ago and now I have a recurring P0442 code. I’ll try replacing the gas cap seal but I doubt that will fix the evap system.. anyone have any advice? Is there a specific valve or something that could’ve gotten blocked? I’m new to this troubleshooting thing.

Thank you,

I have a bunch of work to figure out on this truck including what might be a short that’s draining my battery at night, hopefully that is directly related to my leaking rear window that I ordered new butyl for.

You likely got liquid fuel into the carbon canister. The unexpected liquid fuel evaporating inside the system looks to the computer like there is a leak allowing excess pressure build up. Liquid fuel also ruins the charcoal, and there is no way to clean it out, so the canister has to be replaced, This was a big issue on the Escapes because the carbon canister sits below the level of the fuel tank, so even overfilling just a little would cause this.

Drop the canister and turn it over, if gasoline runs out of it, that's your problem.

Right on, I’ll try that when I get out of work.

How is it possible for gasoline to enter the charcoal canister when it doesn’t exist?

I’m assuming that hose would’ve connected to the canister. Boy I really did myself with this one, huh.

Passing emissions seems like it should be low on your priority list.

I think my priority should be begging the stealership to let me return this treasure chest

Yup. From what I understand lemon law wouldn’t cover that because I didn’t purchase a warranty and it’s 17 year old used vehicle, but I’m not a lemon lawyer.

PA's lemon law only applies to new vehicles in warranty.

There are other things you can do to that dealership though. Particularly if you bought it with new stickers, that they issued. Just threaten to get PennDOT involved.

I bought the truck in NJ... I knew I should’ve stayed in PA, but it was a seemingly fair deal in my eyes.

New I shouldn't have censored my original post.

It was originally supposed to end "F**k NJ".

I'd still be going back over there and saying that you need the missing emissions equipment and the mounting bracketry, installed, free of charge.

Well, I actually do have the canister I wasn’t sure exactly where it was located. Not sure what that hose in the pic I supposed to be. I’m just gonna forget about the p0442 for a bit.. don’t even want to try removing that canister.

I’m calling the dealer tomorrow, but pretty sure theyll just to tell me to buzz off.

Nj has a used car lemon law, but i think it only applies to cars up to 7 years old.

Im pretty sure in nj a used car dealer still needs to have the vehicle able to pass emissions testing on anything past 1996.
