Am I going to be kicking myself later?

Money is getting tight and I really need to regear.

I'm planning on setting up 4.56 with my 7.5 and lockright.

I have an 8.8 in the garage but it needs to be rebuilt, I'd also need to pick up gears and a locker for it. So that would set me back more than I can afford at the moment.

I already have the locker for the 7.5 and I'm not concerned about strength at all with my 2.9L, is it really justified to spend all that money just for the 8.8?
:dunno:

Here's my logic.

Cost:

7.5:
-Rebuild kit: +-$100
-Gears +-$200

8.8:
-Rebuild Kit+-$100
-Gears+-$200
-Locker+- $500

=

7.5 way cheaper

Since you are doing a lockright lunchbox locker I would stick the 8.8 together as it is (open??) and put a lockright when money is coming in better. In addition to being stronger the 8.8 has more locker options too.

Sell the 7.5 lockright to help offset buying one for a 8.8.

My advice is that you should always buy bigger and better.

I just hate the thought of running an open rear for a couple months... it's just not the same! haha

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking about the 8.8 a bit more now.

I would agree with the others. The rear axle in a short-wheelbase truck endures quite a bit of load when you punch the gas or point it up a good steep climb offroad.

Even though I've got a 4.0 I did manage to break my 7.5 while in teh middle of building my 8.8. I would have been really pissed if I had just dumped money into it for gears and a rebuild kit. My Aussie locker in my 8.8 is smoother than the Lock-right in my 7.5 was and it's only like $270 shipped. I've also driven a No-slip in an 8.8 and damn that thing was smooth but well over $400.

I have an open 7.5 and I beat the CRAP out of it. I think of it this way, when it breaks, it'll give me a reason to upgrade. Until then, i'd stick with what you got. On the other hand, if you're going with the 8.8 I may be interested in that locker. :icon_thumby:

I've made my decision to build the 8.8. I'll be happy I did it now when I look back on it later. Thanks for the input!

This dang truck is a money pit... :icon_rofl:
