Actually this is exactly how the tool borrowing program works at a parts store.

That's a totally different scenario. They provide the tools, so you buy the parts from them. Everybody is being honest in the endeavour.

Wordsmyth knew when he bought the dirt he was just going to use it for his trip and then return it. He benefitted. How did the store benefit?

I did a detailed point by point counter point post as to why wordsmyth's actions were immoral and unethical... but you deleted my post, and left his in place. Why is that? Delete it all, or delete none of it.

I probably would have just kept the dirt but it's either here nor there, I highly doubt any store return policies were violated since they took it back.

I suggest that @HenryMac and @wordsmyth agree to disagree and we nip this argument in the bud right now in the interest of keeping things civil here.

I drove the Ranger into town twice today. The roads were snow packed in spots, icy in others as we got about 6 inches of snow and temp's haven't gotten above freezing in days.

The 250# of weight (sand bags and containment) in the bed helped. I drove in 2 wheel drive and the grip seems to be better.. keeping the rear end planted. Sure I could still get it to break loose, but it took more go-pedal and the rear end seemed to grab and snap back into line better.

I did this back in 1985 in my 2wd GMC S-15..... that was a long time ago... I guess I just forget how advantageous it was.

PS: Back then I ran the skinny factory tires and wheels in the snow... and kept the Cragars in the garage.

I used to keep at least a couple sand bags in the back plus a set of BFG All Terrains when I ran 2wd trucks... got around pretty well. Now that I have 4x4 trucks I rarely have anything in the back and just leave the hubs locked if it's snowing... although it seems like we get less snow and more ice these days! I stopped at an intersection yesterday and couldn't move forward or backward in 2wd with a full 50lb propane tank in the back! Had to get out and lock the hubs, wasn't expecting to get dead stopped on flat ground...

I would always drive the mustang in the snow with a couple of sand bags in the trunk, way better traction then the F-150 or that FWD chevy. Now the mustang is very rusty and I regret that decision.

As soon as you loose traction on a FWD car it just starts going where ever it wants.

I always used water softener salt, throw 4 or 5 40 lbs bags in there and come summer use it in your softener.

I have a 2WD and live in snowy eastern Canada. During winter I carry 6 concrete landscaping tiles scattered in the bed. Two in front of the axle, two right over it and two behind it so weight is distributed evenly. Unless I roll over they can't move more than a couple inches.

That's the best option I found that doesn't penalize my cargo space and for the last 10 years it worked really well. 4x4 would be better but I make do with what I have.

That's what I would do is add some sand bags for sure. Haven't had enough snow since I picked up my 87 Longbed Ranger last year, and sadly finding a 7 foot camper shell for it isn't very easy so I will have to add sand bags or something for weight since its 2WD. I don't mind the truck at all, love it, but with the long bed and the light weight they don't provide much traction without some ballast in the bed, if I can ever find a camper shell for it I definitely want to put one on for the winter for weight plus keep stuff dry.

Usually, the fiberglass cap and the platform I put in the bed is enough for decent winter traction. I used to buy sand bags and cycle them through as I used up the sand for clearing and treating the side walks until the supplier to my local hardware store started using plastic bags. The bags retain the moisture that was trapped in the sand and allows the bags to freeze into a solid block of sand and ice. Fine if you want it just for weight but useless id you want to use it as an anti-skid during the winter.

So, the cap and platform work well enough and I call it good. I still need to build one for the 2019 but with it having a shorter bed and more cab, the rear end isn't a light as a Super Cab or Regular cab truck is.

I use 2 Tidy cat cat litter buckets full of sand that I ratchet strap to the hold downs for my tonneau cover. One on each side just behind the wheel wells and this seems to weigh the rear down enough for me to climb my hill to get home. While this is not ideal it keeps the buckets from tipping over or sliding around and allows me to have the center of the gate and bed for what ever I may need to transport durring the winter time.
