I recently picked up this Ranger as a new project. I previously had a 88 Super Cab XLT with a 2.9/5 speed so I sorta know my way around these trucks, lol. This one was a non-runner when I got it and was told the fuel pump was bad. The PO told me he was driving and it just shut off and wouldn't restart. Truck has a relatively new battery with full charge. I've checked fuel (40psi on the rail) and spark (getting fire to the cylinders). I replaced the ignition switch as well as the ignition lock cylinder - both were worn and appeared to be the original parts. The lock cylinder would spin all the way around!
When I turn the ignition switch to start, there is a loud whine from the engine and it will slowly turn, certainly not at normal starting speed. I would guess the starter, but the initial whine really baffles me. Any ideas as to why the engine is dragging, not starting? What should I check next?
I posted a video of my attempt to start it on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3q6440_6Hg
Any help with this appreciated! Thanks!
