OK People, I need some info on known problems.

351 (5.8) Checking the timing.... TDC, rotor pointed about DUE RIGHT of #1, NOT at #1.

Did the 180 thing on the crank, (one full turn) Now Rotor is DUE LEFT of #1.

Lifted distributor, moved rotor to #1, belches, and sounds like it's out (won't start).

Lifted distributor again, (in case I was on "180 out") and did a 180 on distributor, NOPE, still wouldn't start.

In the end I put the rotor back to where it was in the first place.

It starts, BUT runs rough.

ANYONE think the timing chain jumped ???? is this a problem with this engine,
173K km (about 110k miles).

Greg

Doubtful the chain jumped. I'm pretty sure they are doubler roller.

Are you just trying to get it to run smoothly? Have you checked the firing order?

If it starts then I would double check firing order, very very easy to get that wrong even after checking it twice.

Distributor rotor turns Counter-Clockwise
351w and 351c has a different firing order than "normal" for small blocks
1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

Cylinders are:
<front
1-2-3-4
5-6-7-8

5.8l and 5.0l have different firing orders. Verify what to are working on I HAVE encountered this.

Harmonic balancer slip is very common on these. Make sure you are at true TDC by removing the number 1 plug and checking piston movement and valves closed. Then reinstall the distributor. DO NOT move the wires around they must be in the correct position on the cap so the pickup coil is correctly timed to the ignition wires.

Hi Guys, and thank you for the replies.

Checked firing order, it's correct, got a timing light on it.... 40 something advance (with SPOUT removed !!) pulled distributor, moved the rotor (and shaft) back to #1 with 10 advance on the marks, and "TA-DA" !! runs like a top !! (except I'm getting 332 & 172 codes canister purge fail, and lean right bank. other than that, it's TONS better !!!!!

will work on the codes next.
