The system is made up of 3 basic parts. The pushbuttons where you select 2-hi, 4-hi and 4-lo. An electronic control module, often found behind the driver seat in a Ranger. And the shift motor at the transfer case. The shift motor has a little wormgear box on ot that also contains some electrical contacts that tell the controller what position the transfer case us in. Here is a good place to begin troubleshooting and figuring out what components are working, not working or missing. In many cases, the contacts at the shift motor ate dirty or corroded from not being used often enough.
