I just did the throttle body swap on my 88 ranger. I was in the JY today and saw an 87 BII that had the larger throttle body. I snatched the TB then went home and got out my flat file. I knife edged the throttle plate and polished up the bore. It really woke up my old 2.9, I have alot more low end and mid RPM power. The 2.9 never really had any top end though lol.

Are you sure man? When I did the swap I actually lost a bit of the low-end, it was actually very very noticeable. But as soon as I got on the parkway the difference was clear. It would actually pass and really surprise me at speed. Its a trade off, but better to have that power in a case you would need it there than just beating it up around town. The general consensus is that the larger TB does take from the low-end and gives it up top. But hey whatever man so long as you see improvement!

Did you do this on your 92 in your avatar? The difference you are talking about may be due to the difference in fuel metering systems. I have speed density on my 88 and you have MAF.

We need to buy one of those performance meters like a G-Tech to test various modifications to see if they actually improve power.

I think it improved the drive ability most of all, my 2.9 is more responsive now. Its has a crisper throttle response. :)

My check engine light flashed on and of a few times today actually. I later found that a used and crummy Junk Yard throttle position sensor was the culprit. swapped in my old one and she ran fine.

I will say though after I did my own intake tube/ cold air intake, ported and polinshed intakes/ heads, 5 angle vavle job, new springs/ retainers/ locks, rocker arm shaft mod, headers, and a full 2.5" exhaust with stock style muffler and a universal cat the little 2.9 was still a turn but a not so bad smelling one.

I don't believe this is true unless it was california emissions. I had to have a junk yard in cali send me a MAF computer when I converted mine over. Wish it could have been as simple as just grabbing a '92 computer locally.. Ran the 86-87 TB on mine after I put in a custom ground "street" cam - wouldn't have ran on the stock engine management (but I never tried to either).

No, lol, it is an 89' model. I certainly would have mentioned if it were MAF. All I know is that thing lost a bit beating it around town but my god the difference on the highway....its night and day. More responsive like you said. Shame it cant do the same for me at lower speeds.
