My trailer plug was drug on the ground until dead by a person that borrowed my trailer. The plug bought new has a slot for red and blue. My truck has an extra white. I can't get anything to work right and keep blowing parking lamp fuses. Please help me.

I've never heard of one with red... White is your ground wire though. Does yours match this for the most part?

Other than the red wire you mentioned, of course.

What kind of trailer is it? Does it have the brakes, you can pull the lights out and check for direct shorts in the wires. Now may be the time to string some new wires and lights?

Red can be battery power used to recharge battery IN the trailer or for Inside Lights in trailer, so not a trash or car hauler trailer :)
red can also be used to recharge the winch battery on a car hauler :icon_thumby:

(a 12v+ constant should really be black when it goes through the plug though)

I always remembered the 12v constant as black. What is the layout of your new connector? Is it possible that the red pin on yours is the 12v constant?

Thats my guess it is direct from the battery through a relay and a inline fuse with a heavy guage wire. That way your not pulling too many amps through the ignition switch.

I've seen red listed as a Battery/Aux 12v before. It's normally black though.

At least one of those white's should be your ground.

It's a 2013 model 16ft trailer with brakes.

My truck only has brakes wired up for a 5 plug though.

It's just really off that they color coded the new plug and I don't even freaking have two colors on it and I have an extra white. A normal size and a super heavy duty white.

Everytime I get my turn signals perfect my running lights or brakes fail. I fix that and lose my signals.... I'm not happy.

Hmm... Well, just throwing out a suggestion: first things first we need to find which wire is the ground and mark it. Then grab a spare battery and start completing circuits one wire at a time, and mark what each one does. Tedious, but will eventually whittle things down.

My connectors too had different wire colors listed on the actual connector, but I followed a diagram (E-Trailer in particular) and wired it according to that. Similar to the one posted above.

http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx

http://www.etrailer.com/faq-4-5-way-troubleshooting.aspx (just in case)

I just redid my whole trailer wiring due to adding brakes (18' trailers should have brakes right?) and the wiring that was there was shady. My dad mistakenly bought a 500' roll of stranded wire some time ago and it was too late to take it back before we realized it. Not wanting to make all my wires red nor spend all sorts of money on more spools of wire I bought a multi-color pack of electrical tape and went to town. White electrical tape is also nice for writing things on.

It looks shady at first, but everything is marked/labeled and worked great.

the red is brake lights on a system with separate brake and turn signal lights. it can be used for whatever you want. white is ground. some trailers will have a ground wire for each side of the trailer, but normally tied together before the plug

I'll be home all day Saturday give me a call if your in the area.

I figure I'm just going to sit down with a multimeter and go through it one at a time using previously posted diagrams. Thanks guys.

It would also probably help to hook it up to something I didn't wire in a parking lot so I wouldn't get a ticket.

Thanks Rick for getting my lights straightened out and figuring out that we needed a new 'bung' for my brothers EGR tube. We put the crown vi wheels on the Lincoln after you left and pulled the whole EGR tube.

Then rigged up spot lights on the trailer and took turns driving by the neighbors drinking and dancing the Hula because we were so happy to have trailer lights that worked.... even at night.

We are going to run every other lawnmower, tractor, backhoe, moped, car and truck we have as hard as possible so if it has any weak links you can line that out Friday in one visit.
