I’m running a 205 behind my ZF. They fit between the rails and are shorter than the 1356. Like Elutheros said, it’s recommended to add a crossmember and bracket to support the tail of the 205 due to its weight. They are a little noisy compared to the 1356’s though.
As far as a trans, you can use an 80’s AOD. I forget the exact range of years, but it’s an auto with overdrive and is vacuum controlled. A 4wd version came in F-150’s and Broncos.

Hello All from SoCal.
I read most of the postings but not all.
My only concern is the 5-sp with that much torque, from what the OP is saying an auto is more trouble to hook up, this I didn't know.
Will the ZF5 handle this kind of torque ?
Good Luck on the project, sound great, and with a little common sense it will be impressive anywhere you drive it.

The Cummins swap guys use it behind a tuned up 6bt... it should handle a 5.0l.

NP205 isn't much bigger than the stock BW t-case.

I just used a chunk of substantial angle iron and a bushing kit from Bronco Graveyard for my mount.

That is basically what they did from the factory but they had to reach alot farther out to get to the t-case since the frame is wider (left bracket goes on frame, right goes on t-case)

The 4406 is fairly small, it's got a slip spline rear output is the only downside I know of, I've been running one in my 5.0L explorer for a few years and I like it...

Doing things wrong, until I get it right.
@MikeG I'm not too worried about the 5.13s, I have those in my Nissan and run 35s. I installed them to bring the ratio back close to stock which were 4.63s on 235s. Just don't be popping the clutch and bouncing. Somewhere in there has to be common sense.

After my Nissan is running again I might reconsider the 5.13s though.
I knew you were a Nissan guy. ;)

I didn't know that trans was used behind a Cummins, ok so I'm out in left field !

I’m planning on putting one behind a Cummins 4bt running compound boost to the tune of 800+ lb/ft of torque. It may not like that, but I have 2 spares.

They are pretty common for later model swaps, they fit tight in a Ranger but do fit.

FWIW Explorer's frame flares out wider after the trans crossmember.

I have a 205 in mine too but behind a 4 speed. Fits nicely. It's kinda noisy, being a gear driven t-case, but it's smallish and indestructible.
