New to this forum. Do you think the 2019 Ford Ranger 2.3 liter engine needs a catch can?

Needs is a strong word. Pretty much any direct injection engine can benefit from a catch can though. Dunno how the warranty works on a new vehicle as far as modifying things like that though. It would be pretty counter productive to add a catch can at the expense of giving ford a reason to void the warranty.

I’m moving this to the 2019 subforum.

The engine has an oil vapor recovery system installed in it already. It covers both the boosted and unboosted sides of the intake system.

The jury is out on whether the engine will need an additional system as of yet but Ford has made at least an attempt to address the issue that has shown up in every DI engine this far.

The point that Dirtman makes about the warranty is a valid one. Chances are good the dealer and possibly Ford will void your warranty if you install one.

Lastly, the systems I’ve seen out there only address one side of the system and the issue (I think the unboosted side), so even if it is needed, it’s only a partial solution the the problem.

Anybody ever hear any more on these?

Either on their effectiveness or Ford's stance on seeing them installed?

Catch can. For any vehicle. Pvc and egr is retarded.

Every engine gets coked out.

I have worked on quite a few engines with 100s of thousands of miles on them that were only fed fresh air.

The difference is plain to see....especially in wear from sending unfiltered contaminants through the engine.

That said .. no my ecoboost don't have a catch can because they are leased .

Owned unit will be catch canned

I think PCV systems are getting more effective too. I just replaced the intake on my 150 and the valves looked great. Lots of oil slobber in the intake though. My half wore out 5.0 always has a spotless intake when I pull the carb.

Any warranty issues though?

I dunno why you have a pvc system on your engine...

But PCV systems are one of the few emissions systems that was practical and immediately necessary. Not sure how "retarded" it is to have developed a system that reduces oil leaks from gasket failure, increases overall oil life, improves road safety, and reduces pollution.

I think bobby prefers the old crankcase oil breathing system that drooled oil over the side of the engine instead of drooling oil in the air intake like the PCV system does. Either way, it's drooling oil.

Yea could you imagine if all cars on the road today still used road draft tubes instead of PCV systems? It would be like mario kart out there...

Engine is vented with clean air rather than whatever dust I am driving thru. Engine vacuum should circulate it better than it doing whatever it wants. Simple system and it is probably cheaper than a vented cap. Also better for bunny rabbits, butterflies and trees.

My 1946 tractor actually has a gear drive pump that pumps crankcase vapors into the intake lol.

My F-150 has a little PVC in the intake FWIW.

You didn't quote anyone so I thought you was talking to me...

No sorry lol I was talking to bobby who said "PVC" systems were "retarded". I tried to correct it by adding his quote but couldn't figure out how. We posted at the same time, so my post got stuck under yours with no quotes...
