Wanting to start an explorer swap on my Ranger and have some question.
I have a 1991 4x4 4.0 5sp. What year Explorer should I be looking for? I have heard the 96-97 without PATS? Also heard 96-97 uses GT40 P heads which not much for exhaust. I want to run an auto and would prefer to keep 2wd, and low.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
With a twin I beam chassis....rather go 5.3 LS.

The sla chassis is a bolt in for the sploder... so easy to justify. Wanting a manual ...that can limit options with a 2wd applications with a 302.

For power to dollar the Windsor is not my first choice these days

Where you live and what is available for the budget is what I look at.

1996 to 2001 Explorer V8 4x4 would be what to get, complete vehicle

PATS adds a few extra wires but if you get the keys with the vehicle then its really not a big deal
You can install/tape explorer key inside explorer transceiver(taken off steering column) and put it under the dash so it always starts with Ranger key
So don't let that scare you off later years

All of the V8 explorers were automatics
Most had AWD transfer cases(BW4404 or 5), you can swap to a BW4406 for selectable 2WD, 4high and 4low using Ranger switch, control module, and shift motor, or use manual shift BW4406

Electric shift 4WD is not part of the engine computer system, its a separate system, it does need Neutral confirmation from automatic to shift into 4low, but that's about it
In a manual trans Ranger that "neutral" wire is on the clutch pedal switch, runs to 4WD module

You will need a matching year Ranger automatic brake pedal assembly, no clutch pedal, or not, your choice
Also a Ranger automatic steering column to get the column shifter, not sure explorer will work, it might
Or use a universal cable operated Floor Shifter instead of the column shifter
